Nice introduction to atmospheric, old Paris, accompanied by an Amélie-like voice-over.

The movie was reminiscent of Dick Tracy at times, due to the many affected, cartoonish characters - although some came out quite well, like that detective. The design is beautiful at times, although certain things looked rather unnatural, such as some actions of the pterodactylus. Yet also some clever, resourceful and witty scenes (see the tennis scene and the emergence of moaning women in that sport.)

But Les Aventures Extraordinaires d'Adèle Blanc-Sec lacks something, a clear body. Besson could have put more soul into it, by taking a closer look at some details and opting for a clear narrative style. I also question the target group; childish humour, bare breasts (not that children die of that), fairly creepy mummies, and so on.

Plus point is Louise Bourgoin. A beautiful appearance, with enough abilities to revive Isabelle Avondrood.

3* (Besson could be better).

Another ambitious but half-successful film from Besson, although I'm not familiar with Tardi's comic. In any case, Besson creates an absurdist world where fantasy meets history. For example, the French president Fallières is attacked by a pterosaur and the Louvre has to deal with a mummy outbreak. You have to love it because it seemed like there was no red thread in the story at all, except maybe the drama with Adèle's sister. The characters are nicely caricatured. They actually look like cartoon characters. In the beginning it goes on the Indiana Jones tour and they introduce a pretty nice villain who unfortunately doesn't play anymore after that. The film also lacks a bad guy. The special effects with the pterosaur disappointed me; especially when Adèle crawls on the beast. That didn't look good. The ones with the mummy were okay. For me, Besson remains at his best when he does NOT venture into grand bombastic spectacle films with mediocre FX.

Comedy can certainly be added as a genre, because humor was quite a bit in it. All liked for example that pharaoh who thinks a pyramid in the courtyard of the Louvre would look nice. Haha, even Indiana Jones kind of pales in comparison to Adèle, especially when it comes to the opening scenes in Egypt. Separate plot with even more unusual characters, for which they have come up with beautiful headlines. Unfortunately some meager CGI here and there, but that must have been due to the budget. Just a nice viewer, this film. Keep watching as the credits roll; Bokito is also participating...
