Oldřich of Chlum, the representative of King Přemysl Otakar II, is ordered to visit Vartemberk Castle, where the betrothal between knight Beneš of Dubá and the beautiful Ludmila of Vartemberk will take place. The engagement should calm a quarrel between the families of nobility. On the way he finds the body of a murdered merchant who has been ambushed. He sends his page Oto to track down the robbers, but they manage to escape. At that time, Oldřich and Oto do not yet know what impact this crime will have on the ceremony and the subsequent tournament in Vartemberk the following day.
