Tuna fisherman Bill Pascoe sets high standards for the crew of his ship, the Blue Fin. When he takes his fourteen-year-old son Snook on a fishing trip, he finds that Snook is not suitable for fishing. But when Bill needs his son on his ship due to lack of good crew members, it turns out that Snook has more to offer than he thought.
