The first of two competing adaptations of Jules Verne's novel, released in 1997. 20,000 Leagues under the Sea appeared a little later. This was Alan Hume's last film as director of photography.

This version deviates from the well-known story, and that takes some getting used to. Personally, I found it disappointing that romance was created between Sophie, Ned and Captain Nemo. The photography and beautiful surroundings then make up for a lot. Still, this version remains mediocre, and they would have done better to stay true to Jules Verne's novel.
