Ip Man spin-off.

While it might not be a film to immediately place much faith in, there are a few reasons to give it a chance. For one, it's directed by Woo-ping Yuen, and Tony Jaa and Michelle Yeoh have (small) supporting roles. That's quite an enticing prospect.

The problem with Yuen is that he was always a better action choreographer than he was a director. That's no problem for a full-blown action film, but this Master Z is also half crime film, and then you realize it falls a bit short. He's also a year older, by the way; some things are simply unacceptable in 2019.

As a martial arts film, this Master Z also falls a bit short. It lacks just enough impressive action scenes, and the ropework doesn't seem quite up to par either. So, it's a bit weaker in every way than the Wilson Yip films, but that doesn't necessarily make it bad.

Yeoh gets a great action scene, Jaa is quite cool, Bautiste also does a good job in his role, and Jin Zhang gets to showcase his talent several times. The film also looks quite appealing, though not everything is perfectly polished. The editing could have been better, especially since it occasionally disrupts the pace.

A pretty good film, never boring, and with some truly worthwhile scenes. But it can't compete with its bigger brothers, and Yuen himself has made better films. Apparently, he's working on a new film now... maybe it's time to give him a proper farewell.

3.5*

You shouldn't compare this film to IP Man, because it doesn't reach that level.

Still, I found it an entertaining film with good action scenes. Perfect for a Sunday evening!
