Uglies is a light version of the more well-known YA fantasy films and even Netflix indicates that this is a mix of Divergent and Hunger Games. I also get very strong Divergent vibes.

The biggest advantage for the film is that it has been released at a time when the tiredness of this genre is already over. 5-10 years ago this would have been forgotten. Now it gets a fresh new release. What it will do remains to be seen, but the ending clearly leaves a sequel open. Something that is very common in this genre.

Furthermore, the film looks great visually, Joey King does her best and is simply charming again and I have little to complain about the actors.

Uglies is a case of trying to fit too much into 100 minutes. The world building could be calmer in my opinion and with a bit more depth you could have spread this film over 2 parts.

Due to the fleeting nature, the film never really goes into depth, it lingers too short on important plot points and the next one presents itself quite quickly. The wonder and the landing of the events and the world are therefore missing.

The film is just too superficial to really get through to you. The obligatory romance between Tally and David therefore felt forced. The only additional advantage is that the film never lets you get bored.

Not special, but watchable.

Nice, cool science fiction movie and as said before a mix between Divergent and Hunger Games or also The Maze Runner.

Also good acting with, for me, unknown actors.

The only downside for me is that the ending is rushed together with scenes happening quite quickly.

The ending is definitely open to a sequel and I expect they will make it a trilogy

I thought this started off very strong, halfway I thought it weakened a bit but certainly not a bad film. Nice to have seen it once!
