This film was heavily criticized in the press at the time. No idea why actually. I think it's a nice over the top movie, with a story that resembles that of James Bond, but it also certainly resembles Mission Impossible.

The script may look a bit dated, but that also has its charm in a way. Val Kilmer is on a roll here as master thief Simon Templer. It's amazing how many disguises he uses here and one is just about better than the other. Also all those accents he uses for it are somehow very comical. Co-star Elisabeth Shue may not be playing her best role, but she and Kilmer do have a clear chemistry with each other and that's why it all works.

The bad guys also look great. In addition, the atmosphere is very strong, where you can still feel the tension of the cold war. I was never bored for a second, often with a smile on my face and therefore absolutely amused. So very nice entertainment.

3.5*

“Who are you?”

“Nobody has a clue. Least of all me.”

Nice film with strong acting by Val Kilmer and Elisabeth Shue. Both are just not helped by a very mediocre script and some strange character and plot developments. The Saint would like to be a light and smooth spy film with a lot of action and some romance, but really only the chase scenes provide a small revival. For the rest, Kilmer and Shue have to carry the film (with a colorful role of Rade Serbedzija) and they almost succeed.

Oh well, fun entertainment, that's all. I'm not a Kilmer fan, but the positive thing about his role in this movie was his disguises which included quite a few good ones. I didn't like the strange plot. Not so much the subject, cold fusion, but especially the downfall of Tretiak because of this. As a subject for a Bond film, this might have come out better. For the rest it looked nice, at least there was enough speed in it. Despite the fact that this 1997 version scores slightly better, I will also take a look at the 2017 version.
