In my quest reviewing all the van Damme movies that I loved about 15 to 20 years ago, this one doesn't come off so bad. Van Damme wants to make it a more chic film than a lot of b-troop in which he has played enough over the years by making it a period film with nice locations, costumes and decorations. And that helps quite a bit. Especially when Moore also shows up to spice things up, you know that it is in any case not very bad when there is no fighting.

It's a shame that the story is so thin and predictable, with all the clichés you're used to. Make it a really fun adventure movie. The journalist, the fallen brother, recovering lost powers during a battle. It's all a bit too much.

Then the fights themselves. Well, not entirely unpleasant, but if you compare this with the better Hong Kong work. Nice that you get to see all the fights of the tournament.

so not that bad at all, but in the end it's a shame that not a really good movie comes out, it was there anyway. 2.5 stars.

Excruciatingly bad. According to JCVD, Okinawa is a country as well as Africa, there are deserts in Thailand, Scots wear kilts to fight, Germans travel with Zeppelin to Thailand and the language of a very secret international fighting tournament is plain English. Van Damme clearly did not lose any credibility. But that's not all : the dialogues are also annoying as liquid dung, the slow motions are as bad as can be and I found the fights weak (fights that only last 10 seconds). This mess was the beginning of the end for Van Damme. JCVD has had much better movies in the years before such as Bloodsport, Kickboxer, Death Warrant and Hard Target

The Quest is one of the better JCVD films in terms of setting and decor. The average score of this film really makes no sense. If you rate this so low why do you watch a JCVD movie at all... Anyway the scenes are really beautiful.
