The Green Hornet plot

"Breaking the Law to Protect It."

Britt Reid (Seth Rogen) is the son of LA's best known and most respected media mogul. His carefree life is mostly partying until his father dies mysteriously, leaving Britt his sizable empire. Britt then befriends one of his father's employees, the devoted and inventive Kato (Jay Chou). They decide to do something meaningful for the first time in their lives: fight crime. And the best way to do this is... by becoming a criminal yourself. Thus Britt becomes 'The Green Hornet' and takes to the streets with Kato to protect the law by breaking it... The resourceful Kato builds the ultimate retro weapon: The Black Beauty, a fast and indestructible car with the most advanced weapons on board. With this moving fortress and Kato's smart gadgets, they quickly become the terror of every criminal. With the help of Britt's new secretary, Lenore Case (Cameron Diaz), they hunt for the man who rules LA's underworld: Benjamin Chudnofsky (Christoph Waltz). But Chudnofsky has his own plan...

Reasonable.

Gondry tackling a superhero movie starring Jay Chou. You can barely get your head around it, yet the result is quite as you would expect. A somewhat old-fashioned film, but nice and light-hearted and with a reasonably spectacular finale.

Rogen and Jay Chou are a pretty fun duo. It's probably an adjustment for Chou, who is used to being in the spotlight himself, but he does it quite okay. Although I haven't seen him in many more American films, so it must not have been a success.

The action scenes in the beginning are still pretty boring, but the one at the end is really worth it. Especially the part with the car in the elevator, that's just that little bit extra that a film like this could use. Too bad the bad guy was pretty bland again, a known shortcoming.

With Rogen working both in front of and behind the camera, it is not so surprising that the humor also shines through a little harder. Not always successful, but often fun nonetheless. At least a lot better than most Marvel & DC crap, but in the end it's still too much ordinary superhero stuff to be really fun.

Just going.

Reasonable in between, this The Green Hornet, partly due to the retro look in certain designs. On the other hand, that contrasts too much with the 3D-converted action scenes, a not very successful choice.

Seth Rogen plays minus a few pounds the way he always does which makes Britt Reid a noisy case with Peter Pan syndrome. Nevertheless, it all looks nice. The interaction with Jay Chou is okay and Christoph Waltz is a safe choice as a villain, also because he doesn't seem to try too hard.

Should you call this a parody or a pastiche or a variation on a superhero movie? Anyway, because of Michel Gondry's previous work I had high hopes for this, but in the end this is too little the style of the director and way too much that of the star cum scriptwriter cum executive producer - apparently that's so many hats that Gondry could hardly put his own stamp on this. The first time I saw Seth Rogen consciously was in Knocked up, and that movie really freaked me out, but since then I've seen him in the same role too many times, and even when he's not the pothead plays a more conservative and formal character (as in The interview) I still see the same mannerisms over and over again, and in that regard I have reached the point of saturation some time ago. And because the plot itself couldn't grab me and the supporting characters (Waltz, Diaz) barely got anything to do, I had enough of this movie long before the end—and then the horribly overdone over-the-top destruction had to be done. of the newspaper building are yet to come.
Pros: Jay Chou has a sympathetic appearance, the fight between the two heroes in Rogen's living room is hilarious, there are nice little respectively tiny roles for actors that I only came to recognize later (David Harbor and Analeigh Tipton ), and I have finally found out that the signature music of Wire Steel is from the White Stripes.
