Were we really waiting for a spin-off of those unmemorable GIJoe films? I certainly don't, but I suspect that even the biggest fan will regularly have to stifle a yawn when seeing the clichéd action film in which Snake Eyes [Henry Golding] wants to join a clan in the hope that he will discover the identity of the murderer of his father can find out. To do this he must pass a series of tests. Bullshit about whether or not you have a “pure heart” and tidbits of wisdom like “a victory without honor is not a victory” amid a series of boring brawls with a number of substandard special effects.

Well, then the previous two films retroactively weren't that bad! This monotonous origin story about a character that does not exactly appeal to the imagination starts reasonably well, but once we arrive in Japan the plot and characters drag on a bit, interspersed with bloodless and unexciting action scenes. Nice to see Iko Uwais (The Raid) in a supporting role, but he has very little to do. The level of dialogue and sentiment gradually takes on alarming proportions. Disappointment for director Robert Schwentke, whose previous film Der Hauptmann was very strong.

Oh dear. That wasn't easy...

Truly no aspect of this action film can rise above the label "very mediocre". I also used to think Snake Eyes was one of the coolest characters in the world of GIJoe. But I had a really hard time sitting through this movie.

I didn't think the previous two Joe films were particularly special, and I kind of assumed that the bar had now been raised a bit. Not so, to my dismay the bar actually appears to have been adjusted considerably downwards.

The saddest thing of all is the scenario. It's amazing that a self-respecting screenwriter dares to come up with this. And perhaps even more miraculous that it is approved.

This rubbish is absolutely unworthy of the cool character Snake Eyes.
