A detective Tony Church-led campaign to break up the planned drug trade at a hotel goes wrong. Several of his colleagues are killed and the killer makes off with a sum of two million dollars. The call girl Della Roberts is the only surviving eyewitness. Since the incident she has been threatened and she asks for protection from Church, who after his failed performance is now suspected of having part of the missing money. Together, Della and Church must find the killer to secure Della's life.

The bickering between Reynolds and Minnelli is tiresome in this run-of-the-mill crime comedy. There is little new to be found. Everything goes according to the book, including the budding romance. Most action heroes from the 70s could no longer find their way in the 80s and played in increasingly mediocre films. After Bronson and Eastwood, Reynolds also had to make way for the new generation.
