Purple Heart plot

"The True Horror of War...is What We Do to Ourselves"

Dana Andrews is the captain of a World War II flying unit at the time of the first attack on the Japanese mainland. Their plane is hit during the attack and the eight men land with their parachutes in China. They are captured, taken to Japan, convicted of murder and falsely accused of bombing schools and hospitals. The verdict is already in place, they will be found guilty and executed unless they reveal the secret location from which the bomb attack was launched. When the threat of death proves ineffectual, the American airmen are tortured one by one, and they are destroyed physically and mentally.
