“Cell. Prison Cell. How did I get here?”

Great classic. John Boorman's unconventional direction in particular stands out, and it gives Point Blank a somewhat dreamy atmosphere. It is a revenge story and Boorman does not shy away from the hard scenes, but because of the direction it also has something artistic. And it's always interesting when a movie hits Alcatraz. Lee Marvin is on a roll as an avenging angel, but I do wonder what a Clint Eastwood or a Charles Bronson could have done with this kind of role. The other actors and actresses also do well, but the biggest compliments have to go to the direction and the beautifully chosen locations.

Bizarre revenge film that lies between the nouvelle vague of the 60s and a hard revenge film from the 60s/70s. Later (broadly speaking) made into a film as Payback with Mel Gibson, which is based on the same book. The story is not very special, but because of the rather different approach this is quite interesting. A film that radiates all the way from the 60s. Hard, colorful and a bit crazy. As a result, the film is better than it actually deserves.

Very nice deconstruction-like gangster film with noir elements. A stripped-down fairly simple story where only the basics matter. Carefully chosen for the time modernist locations and surprisingly perverse for a studio film from 1967. Boorman very clearly had mainly non-American cinema as an influence. Lee Marvin plays the ultimate Lee Marvin role and Caroll "Archie Bunker" O'Connor steals the show towards the end of the film.

It is striking that Boorman (I only saw Deliverance before this) had such a volatile career and I wonder if the promise of this film was ever fully fulfilled by him.
