Nino Brown is the leader of the influential drug gang The Cash Money Brothers. Nino markets crack, with which he can earn even more money. Police officers Scotty Appleton and Nick Peretti will do anything to catch Nino. Ex-addict Pookie is used by Scotty and Nick to infiltrate the drug gang, but he is killed. Scotty then decides to go undercover himself at the risk of his own life.

Horrible. And that for a film that had remained in the memory with positive catchwords. It turns out to be a ruin, crammed with plot elements that seem to pretend to be cohesive, but don't get any further than tampering. No storyline that manages to convince. From Pookie's (annoying) dealings and walks, the sad mafia clique to CMB's dismantling, which does involve some nice woman flesh; it's all very shabby.
And it goes from bad to worse to worse. Tough is by no means, a few nice punchlines are as good as forgotten. Everything after the mafia hit feels like extra hassle. Ice T's nod to Shaft is the best thing about confronting Nino. The lawsuit is ridiculous anyway, but also completely out of tune. Far too much hay on a fork that apart from the music has very little to offer. Judd Nelson is as lost here as New Jack City is spoiled.

Nice film in which a drug dealer takes over the city. A standard crime film with a rise and fall story. Entertaining, and also quite well developed. On the one hand, the film may not have withstood the test of time completely, but on the other hand it does form a beautiful image of the time. Good camera work and a great cast. Just not 3.5 stars.
