Knight and Day I will mainly remember the cinema in which I saw it. The Alhambra in Keswick (England) has been around since 1913 and since that year the building has always functioned as a cinema, making it one of the oldest in the world.

Charming little building with red plush, lots of ornaments, a real balcony and a very enthusiastic owner.

And the movie? Yes, a nice carefree summer hit with few cinematic pretensions except to provide entertainment and it succeeds quite well in that. Celebrities Cruise and Diaz are certainly not wrong, there is enough chemistry and they seem to be having a good time in the film.

Nice variation on the romcom theme, more action than usual for the genre but in the end there really is no coloring outside the lines.

Mangold is an interesting filmmaker who knows how to make excellent quality films for a wider audience. His choice of different genres is also surprising every time. I would really like to see him make a more daring, more idiosyncratic film. Who knows...

Pretty funny.

The best thing about this film is that people are well aware of what kind of nonsense they are making. Nobody takes this vehicle seriously, which makes it a lot more fun. The result is some seriously over-the-top action scenes, although in the end it's the ones that don't show up (when Diaz is intoxicated) that are the funniest.

Cruise and Diaz both do it properly, it is mainly Mangold himself who is a bit let down. The action scenes themselves don't have that much impact, it really feels like you're looking at some blue screens where everything is projected on. If he had managed that a little better, this would have been a really nice film.

But those who don't have to take their action too seriously and can laugh with the nonsense that these kinds of films often serve will not be bored with this film. It all weighs a bit too light to make a big impression, but for once it is really doable. Unfortunately, that's about it.

Roy Miller [Tom Cruise] is targeted by his deadly colleagues because he is suspected of stealing software that arms dealers have a great interest in. To protect himself from the secret agents who are after him, he forces a plane trip on June Havens [Cameron Diaz], a naive young woman who becomes a pawn in a perilous game of cat and mouse. Diaz doesn't have to do more than smile and look nice in this showcase for Cruise, who also gets more than enough space to play the tough action hero and show his more humorous side in between. You can go far with the charisma of the two stars, but the combination of humor and action feels forced.
