“You're not just an analyst anymore. You're operational now.”

The film starts a bit slowly and the 'backstory' of Jack Ryan could have been left out, but once the story moves to Moscow it gets better. There is some more action and the tension is slowly built up.

Chris Pine is a great Jack Ryan and Costner and Branagh have nice supporting roles. Keira Knightley has a somewhat thankless role as 'girlfriend of' and deserves better. The story has little to say and the ending is a bit rushed. Something about a bomb and New York. Where have we seen that before...

Although it is a bit difficult to say why afterwards. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is a very basic spy thriller. All the familiar elements are there, the film has hardly any surprises and I don't think I'll remember much of it next week.

And even the cast is a bit dubious at times, especially the Russian part. Pine and Knightley are still doing it, Costner is not good but is lucky that he actually fits into his role. So on paper it is very mediocre. But the film itself is fortunately slightly better.

Just enough visual punch, a brisk pace and enough tension. There is really nothing that really stands out, but also nothing that is really boring or disappointing. It is just very well made, nothing more, nothing less. Typical of Branagh's recent work.

Watched this yesterday on Spike TV in between episodes of Ghost Adventures.

Skipped at the time because it didn't seem worth going to to me.

Gladjanus Pine in the lead role is okay, but I never really find him to be sympathetic, which is important for a leading man.

What also strikes me is that I find Costner better and more sympathetic in supporting roles today than thirty years ago, when he still played leading roles like a wooden klaas.

Branagh has once again typecast himself as the arrogant, vain, especially self-absorbed villain, because again, of course, he couldn't find someone better for that.

Film is skillfully and thoroughly directed by him, without ever becoming really special or distinctive. Only the burglary scene made me end up on the edge of my seat and that is really not enough for a film like this.

A five, or 2.5 stars.
