Dode Hoek plot

The story is about Jan Verbeeck, an uncompromising commissioner of the Antwerp drug brigade. As 'Mr Zero Tolerance' he is extremely popular and notorious among the population and in the media. The country is therefore in turmoil when he announces that he is leaving the police to join the far-right party VPV just before the elections. On his last day as a police officer, an investigation leads him to Charleroi, where a raid on a drug lab sets in motion a series of unforeseeable and fatal events.

Disappointment. Lots of clichés and sloppiness in the plot.

Van den Begin saves a few things, but that cannot prevent this film from lacking depth.

An interesting film that somewhat stirs populist sentiment in some people. You never get the feeling that Verbeek is truly wrong, but upon closer inspection, it often goes a bit too far, and the way it's presented raises eyebrows. A compelling character, played with aplomb by Peter Van den Begin. It's also striking how popular Verbeek is, not only in the media or among the public, but even within his own police force, they'd go through hell for him.

That's why it's bizarre that Dries's blind rage—also because of that explosion— suddenly turned so fiercely against Verbeek himself. It all happened so fast. There were also some very bizarre and unusual plot developments or coincidences that Verbeek could almost effortlessly incorporate. The plot then felt sloppy.

It's mainly the cast that elevates the film, and there's a certain tension to be found. The story, however, could have been better. Jan Decleir is always a breath of fresh air, and it's also nice to see a cameo from Adil El Arbi as a café owner at one point.

During a much-hyped press conference, Herman Hendrickx [Jan Decleir], party chairman of the VPV, stated that

Jan Verbeeck [Peter van den Begin], the commissioner of the Antwerp drug squad, is running for president on behalf of the party. Technically, Verbeeck has one more day as commissioner, and when the opportunity to put top criminal Ozgür [Tibo Vandenborre] behind bars on his last day lands in his lap, he seizes it with both hands. But the operation goes completely awry, and in light of his dismissal and the enormous media attention, Verbeeck can't sweep his misstep under the rug as usual. Vandenbegin is phenomenal in the emotionally and physically demanding lead role, and the screenplay by Ben Yadir and Laurent Brandenbourger frequently recalls genre classics like Heat and Training Day. In particular, the subplot surrounding Verbeeck's right-hand man Dries [Ben Haïssa Soufiane Chilah], a born Moroccan whose undiminished loyalty puts him in direct opposition to his immediate environment, adds dramatic value.
