Bandidas plot

"Being BAD never looked so GOOD!"

Sara Sandoval and Maria Alvarez are polar opposites. The only thing they have in common is their Mexican heritage. Sara is the well-behaved daughter of a wealthy Mexican banker and Maria is the daughter of a poor Mexican farmer. When New York Bank representative Tyler Jackson kills Sara's father and takes Maria's father's land, the ladies suddenly have something in common: they want revenge. Though they don't trust each other at first, they are forced to team up in their fight against Tyler Jackson and his murderous gang.

Two beautiful women who are somehow quite funny. Other than that, it's a very slow and extremely predictable movie. Not really interesting.

“I guess this makes us friends...”

“I don't know about friends but partners, definitely.”

Nice film with a nice chemistry between Cruz and Hayek. Bandidas sometimes has a serious tone, but in general this is just a smooth adventure film with a nice Western atmosphere. The film could have used a little more action and tension, because now it is sometimes very casual and a bit boring. Especially in the middle part it gets long-winded, and even Cruz and Hayek can't hide that.

Comedic action with two voluptuous lead roles by Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek set in late 19th century Mexico. A setting in which the Mexican population is heavily exploited by bankers who show no leniency in recovering loans from that poor population. Serious business.

In this setting it is sometimes difficult to determine whether a scene has a deliberately comical approach or whether it wants to apply a serious social-critical accent. This is mainly due to the score that is heavily loaded and intrusive and does not bring any nuance. Is the intention to laugh even though there is nothing to laugh about? Is it the intention to dwell on humanitarian issues, even though they pass very quickly in the film and without going into detail?

There is very little to laugh about in the film. No piece of music can remedy that shortcoming. Some slapstick is still fun. However, most of the humorous scenes are rather easygoing and mindless. As well as the action. This is often characterized by a great deal of mobility of the camera and a miserable positioning of the actors. The scenes gave me a disorienting feeling. Then there's the story. The story is thin and torn and is a flawed framework on which the action and "comedy" are hung.

Cruz and Hayek are nice. One-dimensional and caricatured, but fun. As heroic saviors of the Mexican people and ruthless bank robbers, they are by no means convincing. Those qualities fall into the "smile or I shoot" category. Well, most of the time you're watching two good-looking female characters roll from one exhilarating experience to the next. Two women who are charming and who also harmonize well with each other. It is not unpleasant to undergo.

Bandidas is not much cinematically or substantively. Cruz and Hayek are nice.
