A Gunfight plot

"In Bajo Rio, they pay to see a man kill a bull. Today, they'll pay to see a man kill another man."

The dreaded Abe Cross, who is very good with a revolver, arrives in the small town of Rio Baja. Will Tenneray, also a gunslinger, lives in that town and the people think that an exciting duel will ensue. However, the two men get on well and become friends. Due to a lack of money and pressure from the population, they decide to enter a duel in an arena. In this way, two friends become enemies from one moment to the next.

A film that has a nicely conceived story and where the tension builds up nicely towards the end, but the film does take quite a risk by focusing everything on the final duel, which ultimately makes A Gunfight a bit disappointing. The characters are portrayed in a nice way and the way they confront each other is nicely developed, but because the confrontation between Kirk Douglas and Johnny Cash has a fairly disappointing outcome, their relationship is unfortunately not enough to really make this film good. wear.

The film debut for Eric Douglas and Keith Carradine.

This film was banned in Mexico because it painted a wrong picture of the Mexican population. The story is of course not much, and we have to wait almost an hour and a half for the denouement. Yet there is still plenty happening in the run-up to the match. Not the best in the western genre, but not bad either.

Nice western about a theme that was in the air at the time: what should happen to the gunslinger (and by extension the western star) when he comes of age – The man who shot Liberty Valance, Ride the high country, The over-the-hill gang, My name is nobody, The shootist. The big surprise here is how naturally Johnny Cash plays, and I don't even have to give in to that; His walk is a bit strange and squat, but his dialogue comes out like he has never done anything else, and his character is completely believable as far as I'm concerned. The comedic elements are fortunately kept limited and the film never reduces itself to John-Wayne bar-brawl-slapstick, Kirk keeps it sober, what happens in the background between Nora Tanneray and Alvarez is a nice but unfortunately not further developed side line, and for the end fortunately no hackneyed punched-out card is used. Only I would have liked to see a little more of Keith Carradine, both in this film and in his later career, because his role in, for example, Southern comfort always left me wanting more, but although his CV now has around 150 titles, (including several interesting films and TV series) he never became the star I always saw him as. In any case, a strange and intriguing western.
