James Gunn has described how Avengers: Endgame nearly sent his plans for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 into chaos.
At the conclusion of Endgame, Thor surrenders the throne of New Asgard, instead opting to go on an adventure with the Guardians of the Galaxy. When Gunn, who was already confirmed to helm Guardians Vol.3 at the time, saw this, he wondered how on earth he was going to include the God of Thunder in his script.
“What the fuck am I gonna do?" Gunn asked himself after seeing the end of Endgame, telling Rolling Stone.
"They chose to have that ending in editing.
“Endgame came out right after I decided to do Guardians again. So I didn’t have much say in what was in Endgame.”
Gunn has thanked Taika Waititi for "taking a bullet" for him as in Thor: Love and Thunder, the partnership between Thor and the Guardians of the Galaxy is finished within just a few minutes.
That freed up Gunn to not have Thor appear in Vol.3.
“I said, ‘Thank God!" he continued.
"I was just gonna start up and there’s no Thor. Taika took a bullet for me."
What can we expect from Adam Warlock in Vol.3?
The primary antagonist of Vol.3 will be Adam Warlock, played by Will Poulter.
The appearance of Warlock was teased at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 when the villainous Ayesha said she had created a being named 'Adam' to defeat the Guardians. The entire reason for Warlock's existence within the movie is to destroy the Guardians of the Galaxy, but Gunn says things are more "complicated" than that.
“It’s kind of more complicated than that,” he tells Empire when asked about Warlock's intentions.
“But he’s definitely not a good guy. What we’re seeing is the infant form of Warlock, newly out of the cocoon, and he does not understand life very well. He’s basically a baby.”
Poulter allegedly beat off competition from Bridgerton's Rege-Jean Page and 1917's George MacKay to land the role of Warlock.
