The movie acts as a direct sequel to 1996 hit Twister which starred Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Jami Gertz, Cary Elwes, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Alan Ruck, Todd Field, and Jeremy Davies.
Twister was one of the biggest hits of the 1990s and grossed just under $500 million worldwide.
There's no official premise for Twisters yet, but judging from the trailer, it looks like maverick 'Tornado Wrangler' Tyler Owens (Powell) teams up with Kate Cooper (Edgar-Jones) and her crew to try out a new, experimental device that may have the function to stop twisters.
In addition to Powell and Edgar-Jones, Twisters stars Anthony Ramos, Maura Tierney, Brandon Perea, Daryl McCormack, Sasha Lane, Kiernan Shipka, and Nik Dodani.
In 2020, Hunt revealed that she had written a script for a sequel to Twister, but the studio ultimately passed on her idea. It is unknown at this point whether she will return as Jo Harding as the movie is described as a standalone sequel.
Mark L. Smith eventually wrote the screenplay for Twisters, and he explained that climate change will play a part in the story.
"That's one of the things that we kind of tapped, and it's true," he told Collider when asked about climate change within the plot.
"I talked to so many storm experts, tornado experts, storm chasers, and rode around with some. Even the tornado season itself, because of climate change, what used to be tornado alley going through a certain stretch. It now extends so further east, and it's moving across, and the dates are wider, and the numbers are higher, and the storms themselves are more violent. So we did use elements of that just to shine a light on it, as well, the causes and effects of climate change."
