The horror genre is well-represented on Netflix, particularly with modern movies, but the highest-rated horror movie on the platform is a 1970s classic.

Steven Spielberg's Jaws, released in 1975, is credited with being the first-ever true summer blockbuster. On a budget of just $9 million, it grossed an astonishing $478 million at the box office which was the highest takings for any movie in history before being surpassed by Star Wars two years later.

It tells the story of a small coastal town that is terrorised by a terrifying great white shark. Sheriff Martin Brody must team with an expert marine biologist and a loose-cannon fisherman to bring the creature down before it can harm any more of the townspeople.

It starred Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, Robert SHaw, Lorraine Gary, Susan Backlinie and Murray Hamilton.

Jaws is recognised not only as one of the best blockbusters of all time, but certainly one of the best horror movies in history. It has a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 3.71 Stars rating on MovieMeter.

Here's what our MovieMeter community thinks of Jaws:

Jaws community reviews

"Great classic by Steven Spielberg. Jaws is a monumental film for me, and I used to have the film grayed out. He also continues to impress every time, and I don't think the magic is ever lost. The build-up is brilliant, and the fact that you only get to see the basking shark in its full glory at the very end adds to the tension. The scene in which you see Roy Scheider sitting on a beach chair, and the camera slowly zooming in on him while looking out at the tourists in the water, is unparalleled. Like Robert Shaw's monologue on the boat, arguably the best scene in the movie. In the last part, Spielberg really manages to bring the tension to a boil, but Spielberg wouldn't be Spielberg if he also didn't forget to just make it an entertaining blockbuster. The combination works great, and John Williams' Jaws theme remains iconic. With Scheider, Dreyfuss and Shaw, who also manage to give the film a human and sometimes even comic touch with their inspired acting." - User IH88.

"You won't get a better shark film, even if we are way ahead in terms of time and technology... Striking isn't it? This movie still remains my number 1 movie! Boring? How do you mean? Someone is eaten every 20 minutes before they go on the boat looking for Jaws. The music is great and throbbing throughout this movie, the supsense and how the movie was shot is great, not even talking about the cast. Man man, what a chemistry those 3 have with each other, culminating in that Indianapolis speech. Everything is just right about this film and the 70s atmosphere makes it complete. The fact that we haven't come across a better shark film in 2021 says enough, right? I still give this movie the full 5 stars!!!" - User MrKos.

"How can people not like Jaws? This is a classic film, and anticipating what the shark will do next makes you want to keep turning away, but your curiosity prevents you from doing so. I read that the production team had many problems with the mechanical prop sharks once they were placed in the salt water. So, the movie's director decided to use the movie cameras as the shark, and therefore, much of the film is shot from the fish's perspective, which I think made a good film a great one. Jaws is one of those flicks you can keep rewatching occasionally, and it's just as good as when you saw it for the first time." - User Jay2000.
