The new trailer for James Cameron's Avatar sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, has been released.

The second Avatar movie has been in development for over a decade following the enormous success of the first film in 2009.

On a reported budget of $237 million, Avatar earned never-before-seen box office success, earning $2.847 billion in ticket sales.

The initial teaser trailer was previewed alongside showings of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and two subsequent full trailers have been released.

The official synopsis reads as:

“Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way Of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.”

In 2009's Avatar, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a paraplegic former marine, enters the world of Pandora and eventually falls in love with Na'vi native Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), while dealing with the insurrection from the human army, led by ruthless Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang).

Director James Cameron delivered a keynote speech at Digital Day and in his presentation he allowed those present to see a few scenes from The Way of Water. One of those in attendance was writer-director Liam O'Connell, who waxed lyrical about what he had seen on Twitter.

AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER appears to be the most insanely complicated movie ever made. Holy s***. James Cameron’s Digital Day keynote just broke my brain.

“Just the amount of data they captured... Underwater performance capture with 15 cameras. 2 cams on every actor’s face capture. Underwater reference capture for fully CG creatures. Oh yeah and infrared depth capture to place CG characters in the live action footage.”

O'Connell revealed that one scene, in particular, involving Sam Worthington was "badass".
