Taika Waititi has promised that all is not as it seems when it comes to the potential romance of Thor and the returning Jane Foster in the upcoming Thor sequel, Thor: Love and Thunder.
In July of 2019, it was confirmed that Natalie Portman would be reprising her role from Thor and Thor: The Dark World.
The last mention of Foster came in Avengers: Endgame when it was revealed that she was one of the victims wiped out by Thanos utilising the Infinity Stones.
The fact that Portman is present in Love and Thunder has led many fans to suggest that she will rekindle her relationship with Thor after previously ending things after the events of The Dark World.
However, Waititi, who took the reins of Thor with the popular Thor: Ragnarok, has suggested this might not be the case.
“I think most people will assume that the love story is between Chris and Natalie ,” he told Empire.
“I can’t promise that what people think is going to happen in this film will happen.
“I wanted to embrace this thing that I was always a bit dismissive of, and explore this idea of love, and show characters who do believe in love. On paper, it feels kind of cringy to me, but there’s a way of doing it with cool characters making a cool movie, and also having a thing that no fan ever wants in a superhero movie, which is people talking about love, and characters kissing.”
Previously an astrophysicist in the first two Thor films, Foster returns in Love and Thunder as The Mighty Thor, a being capable of holding Thor's hammer, Mjolnir.
Waititi revealed that Foster's return will be a "mindf*ck" for the Avenger.
“It’s been about eight years,” the film's director explained.
“She’s had a whole other life, and then the love of your life comes back on the scene, and is now dressed like you. It’s a real mindf*ck for Thor.”
Love and Thunder is set to take inspiration from Jason Aaron’s acclaimed comic series, The Mighty Thor, though Waititi admits that he didn't initially set out to create a straight adaptation, but that things developed naturally from the story.
“I didn’t know we were going to use the storyline of the Mighty Thor character until we started working out the actual story,” Waititi says.
“I was writing and it was like, ‘Wouldn’t it be kind of cool to bring Jane back into the storyline?'
"You don’t want Natalie coming back and playing that same character who’s walking around with science equipment. You know, while Thor’s flying around, she’s left on Earth, tapping her foot going, ‘When’s he going to be back?’ That’s boring. You want her to be part of the adventure.”
Thor: Love and Thunder will be released in the United States on 8 July 2022, with it hitting UK cinemas four days later.
