Is Jonathan Majors is the best actor in the world? Someone thinks so...
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania writer Jeff Loveness is delighted to get another opportunity to work with "the best actor in the world" Jonathan Majors on Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
In Quantumania, Scott Lang and his family - Hope van Dyne, Janet van Dyne, Hank Pym and Cassie Lang - are transported to the quantum realm where they encounter Kang the Conqueror, the next big bad of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Loveness made his television writing debut for Jimmy Kimmell Live! and from there went on to pen various acclaimed episodes of Rick and Morty.
He would subsequently be selected not only to write Quantumania but also the next entry in the Avengers saga, The Kang Dynasty.
In the latter, he'll be writing dialogue and scenes again for Majors, the current scene-stealing villain of the MCU.
"l really think it’s a goofy fun movie and I cannot believe that I got to make it," he told Discussing Film about Quantumania.
"And now I get a swing at the bat at the biggest movie of all time with the best actor in the world as the best villain in comics. I’m just going to give it a hell of a shot, man. I’m really going to run at it."
Quantumania received a mixed reception from fans and a negative reception from critics. From the first week of its release to the second, it suffered a 69% drop in box office revenue which is the second-worst drop of any movie in the MCU.
Most of the criticism was pointed at the plot and writing which, of course, is Loveness' area.
“To be honest, those reviews took me by surprise,” he told The Daily Beast.
“I was in a pretty low spot… Those were not good reviews, and I was like, ‘What the …?'
“I’m really proud of what I wrote for Jonathan Majors and Michelle Pfeiffer. I thought that was good stuff, you know? And so I was just despondent, and I was really sad about it.”
Public reaction to Quantumania
Loveness decided to attend a public screening of Ant-Man and that proved to be a more positive experience.
“I’m like, ‘Goddamn! No, are wrong! I’m right! MODOK is great!’” he continued.
“I’m pretty happy with it overall, and I think I learned how to take a punch this week. And now that I learned that it’s not too bad, I can just get on with making things.”
He is in the process of developing the script for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
