It is looking increasingly likely that Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling will star in a prequel to Ocean's Eleven.
The pair are coming off their hugely successful collaboration on Barbie, which is officially the highest-grossing movie ever with a female director (Greta Gerwig) at the helm.
The Hollywood Reporter previously detailed how Warner Bros. hopes to reboot the Ocean's 11 franchise with Robbie as the star.
Though the project is yet to be fully greenlit, it is believed Robbie will star in the new movie as well as produce via her production company LuckyChap, which she shares with her husband Tom Ackerley.
Jay Roach, most famous for his work on the Austin Powers trilogy and Meet the Parents, is slated to direct, and he will also receive a production credit alongside Delirious Media's Michelle Graham.
The script has been penned by Carrie Solomon, and although plot details are naturally being kept under wraps for now, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the movie will primarily take place in Europe in the 1960s.
That is, of course, a deviation from the timeline of the four most recent entries in the franchise.
The original, released in 1960, starred five of the Rat Pack; Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop.
In 2001, a reboot was released and it proved to be one of the most star-studded movies of the noughties, with George Clooney leading the cast as Danny Ocean alongside Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Elliott Gould, Andy Garcia, Carl Reiner, Bernie Mac, Don Cheadle and Casey Affleck among others.
It was a huge critical and commercial success, grossing $450 million worldwide from a budget of $85m.
Two sequels were produced, Ocean's 12 and Ocean's 13 before the franchise was revamped in 2016 with Ocean's 8.
The latest entry six years ago saw an all-female crew put together by the sister of Danny Ocean, played by Sandra Bullock. That also had a strong supporting cast, with Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Anne Hathaway, Awkwafina and Sarah Paulson all starring.
Gosling and Robbie in Ocean's 11 prequel?
The movie's producer Joey McNamara recently assured fans that the franchise would be treated with the respect it deserves, saying:
"I can’t really say much, but I think we’re just trying to do right by the franchise. I’m excited for people to experience it when it’s ready."
When pressed about Robbie and Gosling's involvement, he replied to GamesRadar:
"They’re wonderful together. The more projects even outside of that (Barbie) we can have them do would be amazing."
