There are four major cinema releases in the UK this week, and we have all the details for you.

2023 was a massive year for cinema, with the summer period flourishing thanks to the releases of Barbie and Oppenheimer. The movies were released around the same time and many cinema-goers actually did the double-feature, which was affectionately named 'Barbenheimer'.

Barbie became the most successful movie ever directed by a solo female director, earning $1.44 billion at the box office, while Oppenheimer made $953m. No pressure for the movies that follow, in 2024, then...

Imaginary - 8 March, 2024

Imaginary is directed and produced by Jeff Wadlow and written by Wadlow, Greg Erb and Jason Oremland, while Jason Blum is also a producer via Blumhouse Productions.

Official premise:

'When Jessica returns to her childhood home with her family, she finds her old stuffed bear Chauncey and that her stepdaughter Alice has grown attached to it. After Alice's behaviour becomes concerning and the games that she and Chauncey play turn increasingly sinister, Jessica starts realizing that Chauncey is much more than the stuffed bear she believed him to be all those years.'

Imaginary cast: DeWanda Wise, Tom Payne, Taegen Burns, Pyper Braun, Veronica Falcón and Betty Buckley.

Origin - 8 March, 2024

Origin is a biographical movie directed by Ava DuVernay and based on the book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson.

Official premise:

'Grappling with tremendous personal tragedy, writer Isabel Wilkerson sets herself on a path of global investigation and discovery as she writes Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents.'

Origin cast: Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga, Audra McDonald, Niecy Nash-Betts, Nick Offerman, and Blair Underwood.

Io Capitano - 8 March, 2024

Io Capitano (My Captain) is a  drama directed by Matteo Garrone, from a screenplay written by Garrone with Massimo Gaudioso, Massimo Ceccherini and Andrea Tagliaferri.

Official premise:

'Longing for a brighter future, two Senegalese teenagers embark on a journey from West Africa to Italy. However, between their dreams and reality lies a labyrinth of checkpoints, the Sahara Desert, and the vast waters of the Mediterranean.'

Io Capitano cast: Seydou Sarr, Moustapha Fall, Issaka Sawagodo, Hichem Yacoubi and Doodou Sagna.

Cabrini - 8 March, 2024

Cabrini is a new biographical drama focusing on the life of Catholic missionary Francesca Cabrini.

Official premise:

'Arriving in New York City in 1889, Italian immigrant Francesca Cabrini is greeted by disease, crime and impoverished children. She soon sets off on a daring mission to convince the mayor to secure housing and health care for society's most vulnerable. With broken English and poor health, Cabrini uses her entrepreneurial mind to build an empire of hope unlike anything the world has ever seen.'

Cabrini cast: Cristiana Dell'Anna, David Morse, Romana Maggiora, Federico Ielapi, Virginia Vocelli, Giancarlo Giannini and John Lithgow.
