Lady Gaga is reportedly in talks to appear in the sequel to Joker as Harley Quinn.
The first Joker, released in 2019, proved to be a critical and commercial success as fans flocked to see a fresh incarnation of the most famous villain in comic book history.
Directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix, the latter won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as Arthur Fleck, whose fight against poverty and the elite of Gotham City saw him develop into the Joker.
On a budget of $70 million, it earned an astonishing $1bn at the box office.
A sequel has been in the works for a while, and Phillips confirmed that the script had been completed via a social media post of Phoenix having a read of the story.
The only thing known about the sequel is that it is titled Joker: Folie à Deux.
The title refers to “a delusion or mental illness shared by two people in close association”.
It may now be clearer who this second person may be, as the Hollywood Reporter has revealed that pop superstar and Oscar winner Gaga is in line to play Joker's love/hate interest, Quinn.
In the comic books, Quinn is a psychologist who is eventually manipulated by Joker.
At the moment, Harley Quinn is played to huge success and acclaim by Margot Robbie in the DC extended universe, with the character having most recently appeared in The Suicide Squad.
Joker, not within the extended universe, would allow for a different version of the character.
Is the Joker sequel a musical?
Joker certainly had its fair share of memorable musical moments, such as the infamous dance down the stairs to 'Rock & Roll Part 2' by Gary Glitter.
However, it seems as though we may actually be getting the Joker sequel in the form of a musical, at least according to the Hollywood reporter.
