New images have been released of Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix loved up as Harley Quinn and Arthur Fleck in Joker: Folie a Deux.
The first Joker was directed by Todd Phillips and starred Phoenix, with the latter winning the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as Fleck, whose fight against poverty and the elite of Gotham City saw him develop into the Joker.
On a budget of $70 million, it earned an astonishing $1bn at the box office.
A sequel, Joker: Folie a Deux, is coming - and apparently full of surprises.
“Something I appreciate about Todd Phillips — who I’ve done seven movies with, including Joker — is that he’s always taking risks," cinematographer Lawrence Sher told Definition Magazine.
“We’ve got the new Joker coming out next year and we’re just finishing up post-production on it. This movie is a big swing and it’s going to be really surprising to people. I’m so excited for everyone to see it.”
In the comic books, Harley Quinn is a psychologist who is eventually manipulated by Joker.
Quinn has already been played to huge success and acclaim by Margot Robbie in the DC extended universe, with the character having most recently appeared in The Suicide Squad. Gaga will play a different version of Harley in Joker 2.
In September, Brendan Gleeson joined the cast in an unspecified role, while Zazie Beetz was announced for a return.
