James Gunn has responded to reports that DC Studios is planning on cancelling intended sequels for Man of Steel and Wonder Woman.

Last month, Gunn and Peter Safran were appointed in major roles at Warner Bros. to oversee DC Studios.

The former will lead DC Studios from a creative standpoint, while Safran will focus on the business side of things.

Gunn has actually worked for both Marvel and DC, having helmed The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise for Marvel and The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker (as executive producer) for DC.

Following the departure of previous executive Walter Hamada, the pair have been given these new, vital roles.

The Hollywood Reporter detailed this week how a Man of Steel sequel and a third instalment in the Wonder Woman series were set for the chop by DC, with Gunn and Safran looking to end the 'Snyderverse' started by director Zack Snyder.

The next Aquaman is set to be Jason Momoa's last, too, though he has apparently been approached about another DC role.

With Black Adam actually losing Warner Bros. money, there are major doubts as to whether a sequel will emerge from that series, too.

The Batman series by Matt Reeves will not be impacted.

James Gunn responds

In a series of tweets, Gunn explained that some of the reports were indeed false.

"So. As for the story yesterday, some of it is true, some of it is half-true, some of it is not true, some of it we haven’t decided yet whether it’s true or not,” he wrote.

“Although this first month at DC has been fruitful, building the next ten years of story takes time and we’re still just beginning. Peter I chose to helm DC Studios knowing we were coming into a fractious environment, both in the stories being told in the audience itself there would be an unavoidable transitional period as we moved into telling a cohesive story across film, TV, animation, and gaming.

“But, in the end, the drawbacks of that transitional period were dwarfed by the creative possibilities the opportunity to build upon what has worked in DC so far to help rectify what has not.

"We know we are not going to make every single person happy every step of the way, but we can promise everything we do is done in the service of the STORY in the service of the DC CHARACTERS we know you cherish and we have cherished our whole lives. As for more answers about the future of the DCU, I will sadly have to ask you to wait. We are giving these characters & the stories the time attention they deserve we ourselves still have a lot more questions to ask & answer."
