James Gunn has a 10-year plan for an extended DC Universe that will take place over multiple platforms.
Last month, Gunn and Peter Safran were appointed in major roles at Warner Bros. to oversee DC Studios.
The former will lead DC Studios from a creative standpoint, while Safran will focus on the business side of things.
Gunn has actually worked for both Marvel and DC, having helmed The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise for Marvel and The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker (as executive producer) for DC.
Following the departure of previous executive Walter Hamada, the pair have been given these new, vital roles.
In a conference call with Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav, Gunn explained: "The opportunity to make DC as great as it can be and as it should be – that is the reason why I'm doing this job because I know that Peter and I can do that.
"We spent the past couple days with a group of some of the best thinkers in the industry, the best writers in the industry starting to map out that eight to 10-year plan of what it's going to look like in theatre, in TV, in animation, across the board for these characters.
"I love Superman, and I love Batman. I love their interaction. I love the ways in which they're the same and the ways in which they are completely different."
Gunn will work for both Marvel and DC for a short period, as he is currently still working on Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3.
So far, DC's attempt at an extended universe has not garnered as much success as the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Gunn and Safran announced at DC
After the announcement concerning their new roles, Gunn and Safran released a statement which read:
"We're honoured to be the stewards of these DC characters we've loved since we were children," Gunn and Safran said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.
"We look forward to collaborating with the most talented writers, directors, and actors in the world to create an integrated, multilayered universe that still allows for the individual expression of the artists involved.
"Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and the rest of the DC stable of characters is only equalled by our commitment to the wonder of human possibility these characters represent.
"We're excited to invigorate the theatrical experience around the world as we tell some of the biggest, most beautiful, and grandest stories ever told."
