Indiana Jones 5 director James Mangold has denied reports that there will be a 'passing of the torch' sequence in the final instalment of the popular film series.
Raiders of the Lost Ark was released in 1981, and that was followed up by The Temple of Doom in 1984 and The Last Crusade in 1989.
After a 19-year hiatus, Harrison Ford returned to the role for a fourth instalment, 2008's Indiana Jones and TheKingdom of the Crystal Skull.
That movie received a mixed reception from fans, but earned $790 million at the box office which led to plans for a sequel. In May of 2020, James Mangold was confirmed as director of Indiana Jones 5, while he has written the screenplay alongside Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth.
Steven Spielberg and George Lucas will still be involved as executive producers.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge will play an ally to Indy in the next movie, and rumours circulated online that she might take up his mantle to potentially lead the series going forward should Jones perish or retire.
However, Mangold has outright rejected that idea.
"No one will ever replace Indiana Jones," he Tweeted.
"Not in any script. Not in any cut. Never discussed."
Indiana Jones 5 will be Harrison Ford's last
At Disney's D23 Expo, Ford took to the stage and became emotional as he introduced the first footage of Indy 5 while confirming this will be his last outing as the legendary adventurer.
"I'm very proud to say this one is fantastic. Indiana Jones movies are about mystery and adventure, but they are also about heart," he said.
"We have a very human story to tell and a movie that will kick your ass!
