Fans can expect an emotional ending to the Guardians of the Galaxy saga, according to writer and director James Gunn.
The first movie in the franchise was released in 2014 and starred Chris Pratt as Quill, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel as Groot and Bradley Cooper as Rocket, with the latter two actors performing voice roles.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 was released in 2017, while the final entry in the trilogy, Vol.3, will hit cinemas in May of 2023.
Most of the lead actors have confirmed that this will be their final outing as their respective characters, while Gunn's new role with Warner Bros. and DC means that this will be his final involvement with the Guardians of the Galaxy.
And, he has suggested tears will be flowing in the cinema.
"It depends on how easily you cry. I know that there's been a lot of people crying in the screening, so I guess people cry," Gunn told Collider.
"There's a lot of crying happening. But it's not all sad crying, there's a lot of happy crying in the movie, there's a lot of joy in the film. You know, everybody talks about the emotion, and it is emotional, but there's a lot of joy.”
Gunn relieved to be moving on
Even though Guardians of the Galaxy has been hugely successful and has received acclaim, Gunn admits he can't wait to move on from the series as it has taken up most of his life for over a decade.
"Over the past 11 years of my life, I think I have probably spent 60 percent of my time thinking about the Guardians of the Galaxy. So this has taken up my entire life," he said at a press conference in Paris.
"There is a weird situation where I just have to adjust everything about my world to be about something other than the Guardians, which is difficult.
"But it’s frankly a big relief also, to feel like we’ve finished this trilogy, and we finished it in a way that we’re really proud of, where all the characters get the dignity they deserve."
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be released on 5 May 2023.
