The prospect of helming a Jurassic World movie is the only project that could have tempted Gareth Edwards away from his career break.

Edwards is best known for directing Rogue One: A Star Wars Story which received rave reviews from critics. His other credits include Monsters, Godzilla and The Creator.

He was planning on taking a break before his next project, but that was before Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall approached him to take over the epic dinosaur series.

“I was about to take a break and I started writing my next idea for a film and this is the only movie that would make me drop everything like a stone and dive right in," Edwards told Collider.

"I love Jurassic Park. I think the first movie is a cinematic masterpiece…so this opportunity is like a dream to me. And to work with Frank Marshall and Universal and David Koepp, who's writing the script, I think they're all legends. So I'm just very excited.”

Jurassic Park (1993)

Scientists manage to clone dinosaurs from a drop of dino blood from a mosquito. Enterprising millionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) wants to show the cloned dinosaurs to the public and is building a gigantic theme park for that. A lucky few, including a lawyer, a mathematician, two dinosaur experts and Hammond's grandchildren, are the first to visit the park. However, during the first thunderstorm, the electricity goes out in the park and a number of dangerous dinosaurs manage to escape from their enclosures.

Gareth Edwards to direct new Jurassic World era

Jurassic Park is one of the most beloved movies of all time and is credited with ushering in a new era of impressive CGI which still holds up to this day.

That was followed by The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III.

In 2015, the franchise received a reboot with the enormously successful Jurassic World, which grossed almost $1.7 billion at the box office.

Though its sequels Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Jurassic World: Dominion did not receive as positive reviews, they both still grossed well over a billion dollars also.

Edwards is set to take over what is being described as a new era for the film series, which means it is unlikely that we will see characters from the previous movies played by Sam Neil, Laura Dern Jeff Goldblum, Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas-Howard.

David Leitch was previously in talks to direct, but negotiations fell through.
