David Harbour admits he feared for his career after the commercial and critical failure of the 2019 reboot of Hellboy.

The character has been played twice on screen before to acclaim by Ron Perlman, but for the reboot, the Stranger Things hero won the role.

The 2019 version of Hellboy was panned by critics and made just  $55.1 million from a budget of  $50m, making it a box office bomb.

Harbour, who most famously plays Jim Hopper in Netflix series Stranger Things, says he contacted Ryan Reynolds for advice after the film's release as he had a similar experience with The Green Lantern.

“It was a very difficult experience because I wanted a lot out of it. I really like , I like that character,” he told GQ.

“And then immediately when it began, even when it was announced, I realised that people did not want that character reinvented. I was very naive and optimistic about what we were going to do.

“I know him a little bit. I called him and I was like, 'Hey man, I just need to know something. You know Green Lantern? Huge flop for you. What the fuck is that like, because I think I’m going to hit that right now. Am I gonna be okay? Am I gonna survive this?'”

Harbour continued by saying that Reynolds was "sweet" about the line of questioning.

Will there be a sequel to Hellboy?

Speaking to ComicBook.com, Harbour was asked if there was any sequel in the works to Hellboy, which currently has a rating of 18% on Rotten Tomatoes.

"I don't think there'll be much of a light," he replied.

"There's a lot of people who reach out to me who really loved it and really enjoyed the new take, and were just happy to see him back on the screen, but I know in the culture at large, I don't think it was very well received.

"I don't think it made a lot of money. I don't really keep up with those things too much to be honest, but I don't think the perception was that it was a hit, and so in that way, I don't know that the risk is worth it.

"I think the idea is to move on. The producers spoke to me just saying 'Great job,' they really liked what I did, but I haven't heard anything about a sequel, and I'm not hanging my hat on anything like that."
