The Christopher Nolan-Cillian Murphy collaboration is becoming one of the most successful in Hollywood history, especially after the release of Oppenheimer.
Nolan's latest movie tells the story of the birth of the atomic bomb via The Manhattan Project. It stars Murphy in the title role as Robert J. Oppenheimer. The movie presents the first time Murphy has been a leading man for Nolan despite the pair having worked on Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Inception and Dunkirk previously.
When asked what OTHER of Nolan's movies he would have liked to have starred in, Murphy responded to The Independent:
“I adore Interstellar just because I find it so emotional,” he said.
“I remember seeing it in the cinema when I had little kids. It just had a big impact on me. It broke my heart. I love watching his films when I’m not in them because you don’t have to freak out about the size of your ears, or whatever.”
Murphy reckons that Interstellar or Dunkirk would make a good double-bill feature alongside Oppenheimer.
"You could go Interstellar, which is very... explores similar scientific, physic themes. Or you could watch Dunkirk, which is also set in World War II," he explained.
"Dunkirk is shorter, so that might be a good match ‘cause it’s like an hour-and-a-half, and then you can go into .”
Oppenheimer has received critical acclaim and also recently became the most successful World War II movie ever in terms of box office.
Murphy is finally Nolan's leading man
Though Murphy is finally leading a Nolan movie, he says he would take any part, big or small, if it meant working with the director.
“I have always said publicly and privately, to Chris, that if I’m available and you want me to be in a movie, I’m there. I don’t really care about the size of the part. But deep down, secretly, I was desperate to play a lead for him,” Murphy told Yahoo.
“We have this long-standing understanding and trust and shorthand and respect. It felt like the right time to take on a bigger responsibility. And it just so happened that it was a huge one…Any actor would want to be on a Chris Nolan set, just to see how it works and to witness his command of the language of film and the mechanics of film and how he’s able to use that broad canvas within the mainstream studio system to make these very challenging human stories.
"I’m really proud of the movie and I’m really proud of what Chris has achieved. This was, for sure, a special one”.
