The brand new trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has been released which provides us more insight into the villain played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
'Having failed to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Manta, still driven by the need to avenge his father’s death, will stop at nothing to take Aquaman down once and for all. This time Black Manta is more formidable than ever before, wielding the power of the mythic Black Trident, which unleashes an ancient and malevolent force. To defeat him, Aquaman will turn to his imprisoned brother Orm (Patrick Wilson), the former King of Atlantis, to forge an unlikely alliance. Together, they must set aside their differences in order to protect their kingdom and save Aquaman’s family, and the world, from irreversible destruction.'
In the comic books, Arthur Curry/Aquaman is concerned with protecting the world's oceans and climate change, and this resonated with Momoa, who apparently used to be a marine biologist.
"He was the most made-fun-of action figure there was at the time, but I thought it was really cool." he explained on Jimmy Fallon.
"I grew up a marine biologist so I really wanted to help the ocean, save the planet, so it's really cool to come full circle, with these little kids looking up to you."
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be released in cinemas on 22 December, and from the trailer it seems like Curry will need to contend with Black Manta attempting to wipe out his entire bloodline - including his child.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom cast: Jason Momoa, Patrick Wilson, Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Nicole Kidman, Dolph Lundgren, Randall Park, Temuera Morrison and Vincent Regan.
