Het internationale filmfestival in Toronto is de officieuze start van het Oscar-seizoen. Er worden honderden films vertoond.

Ook de Nederlandse film Ober (Alex van Warmerdam) krijgt in Toronto zijn wereldpremière.

*Noord-Amerikaanse premières (films die eerder in Cannes zijn vertoond of volgende week te zien zijn in Venetië) van onder andere Babel, Bobby, Infamous, Volver, Little Children, etc. etc. etc. en niet te vergeten: Paul Verhoevens Zwartboek.

De Nederlandse docufilm (?) De Terrorist Hans-Joachim Klein (Alexander Oey) is ook te zien op het festival.

Het festival moet nog op gang komen, maar iedereen heeft het over 'Borat' in Toronto... Gisteravond zou de film in wereldpremière gaan, maar helaas ging het feestje niet door...

Stalled screening angers Toronto aud

Fox had a damage control situation on its hands late Thursday night when the print of its midnight preem of the "Borat" movie stalled, leaving more than a thousand Toronto Film Festival viewers vocally annoyed.

Thirty minutes in, the film ground to a halt because of what was described as a faulty projector, and the raucous crowd didn't hold back.

Pic's star, Sascha Baron Cohen, who plays the ingénue immigrant from Kazakhstan, popped up from the audience in character to divert the audience, but it was soon clear this wasn't planned.

Michael Moore, apparently there as helmer Larry Charles' guest, even got on stage with the director and at one point even called out jokingly to a nervous-looking Ari Emanuel in the audience, "If this doesn't get fixed you're going to get fired, motherfucker." (Moore also revealed that his "Sicko" is slated for a June release.)

But duo could only hold aud for so long, and soon Cohen was back, as Borat, trying to save face for the pic. Actor partly pulled it off, deadpanning in his nasal Slavic accent to an organizer that "If you don't give these people money back, I crush you."

But when the event was reskedded for a new venue Friday after more than an hour delay, many booed, raising question of what effect the disappointment of a thousand dedicated fans will have on a word-of-mouth picture.

Earlier the night showed signs of promise when as many as a thousand festgoers thronged the street at midnight chanting "Bo-rat" and waving Kazakh flags, while the character strode down the red carpet with an ox-cart, a horse and many women dressed as Kazakh peasants in tow.

Zeven Belgische coproducties op filmfestival Toronto.

Op het Internationaal Filmfestival van Toronto, in Canada, zijn van 4 tot 13 september zeven Belgische coproducties te zien. Dat deelt het Centre du Cinéma et de l'Audiovisuel van het ministerie van de Franse gemeenschap mee, dat vijf van de zeven coproducties financieel ondersteunt.

De film 'Le silence de Lorna' van de broers Dardenne wordt getoond in de 'Masters'-sectie van het festival van Toronto. Deze film, die al de Scenarioprijs van het festival van Cannes wegkaapte, is een coproductie van België, Frankrijk en Italië.

'Vinyan', van Fabrice Du Welz, is een samenwerking tussen België, Frankrijk en Groot-Brittannië. In dezelfde sectie vinden we ook 'Unspoken' terug, de nieuwe prent van Fien Troch. Haar film is een Belgisch-Nederlandse coproductie.

Voor 'Séraphine', van de Franse regisseur Martin Provost, werkte België dan weer samen met Frankrijk. Tot slot is 'Restless', van de Israëlische regisseur Amos Kollek, een samenwerking tussen Israël, Canada, Duitsland, Frankrijk en België.

De films 'JCVD', van Mabrouk El Mechri met Jean-Claude Van Damme in de hoofdrol, en 'Un barrage sur le Pacifique' van Rithy Panh worden niet ondersteund door de Franse Gemeenschap. (belga/hln.be)

Indrukwekkende lijst.

Meest opvallende titel uit de lijst is dat Ettore Scola een nieuwe film gemaakt heeft. Wie had dat (nog) gedacht? Johnnie To met Man Tam / Blind Detective een 'nieuwe' heeft die waarschijnlijk ook op het IFFR zal draaien. Regisseur Denis Villeneuve komt naast Prisoners met nog een nieuwe film met Jake Gyllenhaal op de proppen. Sean Durkin levert een miniserie af. Aha, en James Franco levert zijn tiende film af dit jaar. In welke hoofdcompetitie van een prestigieus Filmfestival zat hij dit jaar niet?

En Richard Ayoade (Submarine), Amma Asante (A Way of Life), Jasmila Zbanic (Grbavica en Na Putu), Juraj Lehotsky (Blind Loves), Jennifer Baichwal (Manufactured Landscapes), Levan Koguashvili (Street Days), Peter Stebbings (Defendor), Götz Spielmann (Revanche), Godfrey Reggio (Qatsi trilogie), David Mackenzie, Brillante Mendoza en Hitoshi Matsumoto hebben een nieuwe film! En waarschijnlijk genoeg ontdekkingen waarvan wij nog niet gehoord van hebben.

Ik hoop dat 'manuscripts don't burn' de nieuwste van Mohammad Rasoulof opgenomen wordt in het programma van het komende MOOOV festival. Won al met 'the white meadows' de hoofdprijs en zijn vorige film 'goodbye' werd ook vertoond.

Recordaantal Nederlandse films naar Toronto

Best wel een indrukwekkend programma. Snap wel waarom Venetië tegenwoordig wordt overgeslagen door pers / programmeurs. Er is zoveel te zien en je kunt er echt alle kanten uit.

Vooral benieuwd naar deze drie.

Ze zijn dus toch om... Iets van een competitie. Ik ben niet verbaasd, dat gaat goed voor ze uitpakken.

Eenmalig dan, begrijp ik dat goed?

Het (overvolle) programma is deze week bekend gemaakt. Naar welke titels kijken jullie het meeste uit? Heb zelf alleen gekeken naar de bijprogramma's 'Wavelengths' en 'Contemporary World Cinema'. En kwam tot dit lijstje:

- The Event (Sergei Loznitsa)

- Minotaur (Nicolás Pereda)

- Box (Florin Serban)

- Lamb (Yared Zeleke)

- Les êtres Chers (Anne Émond)

Verder nog benieuwd naar de nieuwe film van Hadzihalilovic, Davies, Vallée en het debuut van Reichardt dat nu helemaal opnieuw gerestaureerd is. Lijkt me een IFFR-zekerheidje. En zie nu opeens dat mijn favoriete Ierse regisseur Abrahamson een nieuwe film heeft. Altijd leuk. En de nieuwste short van Lois Patiño ben ik natuurlijk ook benieuwd naar:

Heeft de goedkeuring gekregen van niemand minder dan Weerasethakul.

Brimstone geselecteerd voor het Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF)

FULL LINE UP 2016

Geen Terrence Malick. Opvallend.

Van alle filmfestivals vind ik TIFF het meest interessante ...

1) Toronto International Film Festival ( Toronto )

2) Mostra internazionale d'arte cinematografica ( Venezia )

3) Festival de Cannes ( Cannes )

Waarom?

TIFF houdt zich veel minder bezig met ( vriendjes) politiek en veel meer met cinema . Geen gezeur en rare statements maken over de gevolgen van broeikaseffect , gay rights , Islam of tegen Putin , Iran , Noord-Korea of wat dan ook . De kwaliteit van films is veel belangrijker dan rare politieke statements . TIFF is ook veel minder corrupt , minder vriendjespolitiek en minder commercieel etc. .

De Europese cinema is nagenoeg dood . Interessante projecten komen tegenwoordig vooral uit America ( north & south ) ; American Independent Cinema ( indies ) , etc. . Indies spelen een zeer belangrijke rol bij TIFF en er wordt veel aandacht besteed aan independent cinema .

Layla M. (2016), de nieuwe film van Mijke de Jong zal in wereldpremière gaan tijdens het Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) dat van 8 tot 18 september 2016 plaatsvindt. De film is geselecteerd voor het prestigieuze onderdeel Platform. In Nederland is de film vanaf 17 november te zien in de bioscopen.
