The four International Juries of Venezia 74:
The members of the International Jury of the Orizzontisection are:
· The Italian director Gianni Amelio (President of the Jury). He debuted in feature films with Colpire al cuore (1982), which participated In Competition in Venice, where he won the Golden Lion in 1998 with Così ridevano; he returned to Venice three more times. Other films of his include The Stolen Children (Grand Prize of the Jury in Cannes in 1992), Lamerica and The Keys to the House. This year, La tenerezza received the Silver Ribbon for Best Film.
· Rakhshan Banietemad is one of Iran’s most important filmmakers, the director of numerous documentaries and fiction films such as Under the Skin of the City and Our Times, fundamental works of Iranian cinema. In 1995, The Blue Veiled won the Bronze Leopard in Locarno, while Taleswon Best Screenplay at Venice 71.
· The American director Ami Canaan Mann. She has directed three feature films. She debuted in 2001 with Morning; in 2011 she presented Texas Killing Fields In Competition in Venice, where she returned three years later with Jackie & Ryan, selected for the Orizzonti section. She has directed episodes for several TV series such as Robbery Homicide Division and, most recently, Shots Fired and Sneaky Pete.
· The Irish-Scottish director, screenwriter and curator Mark Cousins. He has made many documentaries and is particularly famous for his monumental The Story of Film: An Odyssey, a 930-minute journey through the history of cinema. He has also made short films and experimental works, and is a university professor and essayist. He directed his first fiction film, Stockholm, My Love, in 2016.
· The Argentine screenwriter, architect and artistic curator Andrés Duprat. He wrote the screenplays of El artista (2008), El hombre de al lado (2010), Querida voy a comprar cigarrillos y vuelvo (2011) and El ciudadano ilustre (2016), all of which were directed by Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat. El ciudadano ilustre allowed Oscar Martínez to winthe Coppa Volpi in Venice. Duprat is the curator of the Pavilion of Argentina at the 57th International Art Exhibition of the Biennale di Venezia.
· The Belgian director and screenwriter Fien Troch. She debuted in feature films in 2005 with Someone Else’s Happiness, presented in Toronto, where she returned with her next film, Unspoken. Her most recent movie, Home, won Best Director in the Orizzonti section in Venice in 2016.
· Rebecca Zlotowski is a French screenwriter and the director of three feature films. Her first movie, Belle épine, was presented in 2010 in Cannes, where she returned in 2013 with Grand Central in Un Certain Regard. Planetarium, her 2016 film starring Natalie Portman, was presented Out of Competition in Venice.
The Jury of the Orizzontisection will award the following prizes, with no ex-aequo permitted:
Orizzonti Award for Best Film; Orizzonti Award for Best Director; Special Orizzonti Jury Prize; Orizzonti Award for Best Actor; Orizzonti Award for Best Actress; Orizzonti Award for Best Screenplay; Orizzonti Award for Best Short Film.

The lineup of the 2017 Venice International Film Critics
Ik noteer in ieder geval het Duitse Drift. 
Les Garçons Sauvages klinkt ook prikkelend met o.a. Elina Löwensohn en het Turkse Körfez kan ook iets zijn. Teleurstellend om te lezen dat de enige Latijns-Amerikaanse film in de competitie zo'n onboeiend plot heeft.

In ieder geval noteer ik de nieuwe film van Kim Nguyen, Pen-ek Ratanaruang en het debuut van Pengfei - wordt ook wel de nieuwe Tsai Ming-Liang genoemd. Nog nooit iets van Faouzi Bensaïdi, Vincenzo Marra, Nathan Silver, Anne-Riitta Ciccone en Ruth Mader gezien dus misschien is dit het juiste moment.

Ik vraag me wel eens af hoe dat eigenlijk zit bij de inzendingen voor festivals. Maar heb daar eigenlijk nooit statistiek over kunnen vinden. Je leest wel heel veel over meer gelijke Gender vertegenwoordiging op festivals. Maar net over de inzendingen bak lees je nooit iets.
Ik zat kennelijk net verkeerd te googlen: Onderzoek naar 19 Duitse festivals op vertegenwoordiging van vrouwelijke reg.
Less than 5% = Ouch.

Het meeste boegeroep kwam uiteindelijk door deze teaser die voor iedere film draaide. Volgens de geruchten in de wandelgangen kwam het omdat er te weinig Italiaanse films inzetten. Ik tel er eentje: Caro Diario. Heb hem nu een stuk of 60 / 70 keer gezien en ben er nog steeds verliefd op.

These are all features of the 12 films selected as well as being reflected in the special events held during the Days in the Villa degli Autori.

Venice International Film Critics' Week op ICM:
For these reasons, the section, which is independently organized by the Sindacato Nazionale Critici Cinematografici Italiani (SNCCI) – Italian National Union of Film Critics – within the Venice International Film Festival, has for some years now exclusively proposed debut feature films to an audience of cinephiles, film industry professionals and hopefully an increasing number of film goers.
In tegenstelling tot bijvoorbeeld de Tijgercompetitie van het IFFR gaat het hier echt alleen om debuutfilms. Dus niet om tweede of derde film van een beginnende regisseur. Ze selecteren ieder jaar zeven speelfilms - erg strenge selectie dus - daardoor hebben ze door de jaren heen behoorlijk wat grootheden ontdekt en gebracht. Om er een aantal te noemen: Pedro Costa, Harmony Korine, Alex van Warmerdam, Zeki Demirkubuz, Rian Johnson, Pablo Trapero, Kenneth Lonergan, Vlado Skafar, Bryan Singer, Mike Leigh, John Hillcoat, Olivier Assayas, Kevin Reynolds, Nacer Khemir. et cetera.
Ze zijn overigens niet vies van experimentele films. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan het Duitse Drift (Helena Wittmann) of het Iraanse Tabl (Keywan Karimi). Van de zeven films vorig jaar draaide er vier op het IFFR. Er zijn overigens jaargangen waar ze standaard een Taiwanese, Chinese of Japanse selecteerden maar dat lijkt momenteel voorbij. Voor nu zou ik heel graag Zerrumpelt Herz, L'apprenti en Terre Battue willen zien.

Venice Festival: 15 Films That Could Make the Lido Cut:
The Italian festival is on a major hit streak, having picked the best-picture Oscar winner three of the last four years, with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Birdman, Thomas McCarthy's Spolight and last year's The Shape of Water from Guillermo del Toro (not to mention Damien Chazelle’s La La Land , which won several Oscars but not for best picture, or Martin McDonagh's crossover hit Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri from last year)

Van alle drie de grootheden is Berlijn het meest toegankelijk maar ook in Venetië kun je als bezoeker kaarten kopen. Meen dat alle studenten van de universiteiten in Italië en er buiten in ieder geval een accreditatie kunnen aanvragen waardoor ze naar best veel films 'gratis' kunnen gaan. Zie ook:
The accreditation for University students may be requested by Italian and foreigner students of any faculty.
The accreditation will be valid for the 11-day duration of the Festival (30th August to 9th Sept.) and will allow access to some 200 screenings reserved for accredited visitors and including films in the official line-up (selected screenings as long as seats are available).

Yuva (Turkey) – Emre Yeksan (director), Anna Maria Aslanoğlu (producer) - VEYSEL's wild solitary life in the woods is disrupted when the land he inhabits is sold to investors. One day, his younger brother HASAN comes from the city to convince him to leave. As the imminent threat of the eviction rapidly grows, the belated confrontation of the two brothers leads to the discovery of a magical home: A hidden universe in the heart of the forest.
Deva Mall (Hungary) – Petra Szocs (director), Péter Fülöp (producer) - In the small Romanian town of Deva, Kato, a teen girl living in an orphanage gets electrocuted while drying her hair. This event changes the world around her. The orphanage is invaded by electricians, and a new volunteer, Bogi is hired to help. Kato becomes infatuated with her, and when she realizes that Bogi is going to leave soon, she decides to sacrifice an old volunteer for the new one.
