Which French directors are likely to be vying for the Golden Lion?

On the other hand, it would seem that Claire Denis’ High Life is actually angling for a North American world premiere. Lastly, a thick veil of mystery shrouds Mektoub, My Love – Canto Due by Abdellatif Kechiche, as the relationship between the director and Pathé is one of the key components of the film’s fairly hard-to-read international launch strategy.

Pre-opening event of the 75th Festival on Tuesday 28 August:

The silent film classic The Golem – How He Came Into The World (Der Golem – Wie er in die Welt kam, 1920), written and directed by Paul Wegener, is the film chosen for the Pre-opening event on Tuesday August 28th of the 75th Venice International Film Festival, to be shown in the Sala Darsena (Palazzo del Cinema) on the Lido.

First Man by Damien Chazelle opening film of the 75th Venice Film Festival:

Universal Pictures’ First Man, directed by Damien Chazelle (La La Land, Whiplash) and starring Ryan Gosling, Jason Clarke and Claire Foy, has been announced as the opening film, in Competition, of the 75th Venice International Film Festival (August 29 – September 8, 2018), directed by Alberto Barbera and organized by the Biennale di Venezia, chaired by Paolo Baratta. The announcement of the world premiere of the film comes on the eve of 49th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing on the moon.

The lineup of the 2018 Venice International Film Critics Week:

The Venice International Film Critics’ Week (SIC) is an independent and parallel section organized by the National Union of Italian Film Critics (SNCCI) during the 75th Venice International Film Festival (29th August – 8th September, 2018). The programme includes a selection of seven debut films in competition and two special events out of competition, all presented in world premiere screenings. The selection is curated by the General Delegate of the Venice Critics’ Week Giona A. Nazzaro together with the members of the selection committee Luigi Abiusi, Alberto Anile, Beatrice Fiorentino and Massimo Tria.

Vorig jaar zag er zeven van de negen. Met Drift als het MEESTERWERK maar dit jaar zou ik echt niet weten wat ik moet gaan zien. Of zie ik iets over het hoofd?

Venice Days. Elsa Amiel komt eindelijk met een langspeler nadat ze o.a. als assistent werkte voor Bertrand Bonello. Kan interessant worden. Félix Dufour-Laperrière - regisseur van Transatlantique - heeft een nieuwe film. Dit keer een poëtische animatiefilm. Fellipe Barbosa en Rithy Panh hebben beiden ook een nieuwe film af. Ben benieuwd.

Synopsis van deze Italiaanse film klinkt intrigerend en dit zou een Rohmeriaans debuut zijn uit China. Verder komt Alexander Kluge na zoveel jaar weer met een speelfilm:

This is an auteur film - like the ones I made in the past. At the same time the film features the extraordinary young director Khavn De La Cruz from Manila. Taken together, the result is a music film of a special kind. At heart, the film concerns electric light, the circus, the song Blue Moon and street wars among children's gangs in North Manila, a wilderness otherwise inaccessible to western eyes. Blue Moon, the song once identified with the voice of Elvis Presley, refers to a phase of the moon that might never actually appear: just as things can often go with love. But sometimes never comes to pass. We see how the circus comes to town with the appearance of President Trump at the G-20 Summit in Hamburg in 2017; we see how the street wars of the children in Manila run on for years; Helge Schneider appears as a "human light snake" as in Edison's Annabelle: Serpentine Dance from 1895; my friend the dramatist Heiner Müller philosophizes about the moon; we hear a musical requiem for commodities that lie unpurchased on Saturday; we see the dramatic evacuation of a circus in Russia that tries to save its elephants as it flees from the German tanks in 1941; the peaceful grooming of elephants in the early morning stands in contrast to our world that is increasingly savage; the poet Ann Cotten appears in the role of King Kong - that cinematic hero who defends what he loves to the death. This motif, with which the film comes to an end, is an adaption of my book Kong's Big Moment: Chronicle of Coherence. Elephants already appeared as prominent characters in my film Artists at the Top of the Big Top: Perplexed, premiered in Venice 50 years ago. But how violently different look the pictures in Happy Lamento compared with the pictures of the world fifty years ago!

Een paar leuke verrassingen in de hoofdcompetitie: Minervini, Nemes, Reygadas en Tobal. Van die laatste had ik überhaupt nog nooit eerder gehoord. Ook erg blij met de nieuwe Assayas + Cuarón, Audiard en de Coen's leveren een western af en Greengrass een controversiële film waarin Anders Danielsen Lie Breivik speelt. Ben benieuwd. Het debuut van Corbet + Kent liggen hier klaar voor huiswerk.

Overigens nu al zes titels aangekocht door Netflix. Dat schiet al op als er keuzes gemaakt moeten worden .

Is er iemand trouwens bekend met het werk van Mario Martone? Zijn nieuwste draait in de hoofdcompetitie:

Reinout Scholten van Aschat speelt één van de hoofdrollen. Is dit de Italiaanse stinker? Of toch weer Guadagnino?

Verder loopt Tsukamoto er als enige Japanner wat verdwaalt rond. Waarom hij nu juist Azië moet verdedigen is me niet helemaal duidelijk. Sowieso een recordaantal van Engelstalige films en slechts één regisseuse.

Moet je niet vanuit gaan want dan kan het alleen maar meevallen.

Why the Oscar Winner Partnered With Netflix and Became His Own Cinematographer:

Netflix never made an official announcement about the acquisition, which took place well over a year after the drama wrapped production. Linde told IndieWire Netflix officially boarded the project “in March or April, maybe a little earlier” after he and Cuarón met with several other interested distributors.

“One of the things you have to keep in mind is today’s theatrical market for foreign-language films is really, really complex,” Linde told IndieWire, when asked about why the two settled on Netflix. “We had to really think it through and figure out the best way for the film to be seen in theaters, but also to reach the largest audience possible. As we thought a lot about how the film would be presented around the world, Netflix’s presentation was very convincing.”

Linde stressed that it’s “very important for us that the film be seen in theaters,” noting Cuarón shot the movie on 65mm using a “really pristine, almost never-before-seen black and white.” The film’s sound design is also instrumental to the experience, as it was constructed using state-of-the-art Dolby Atmos technology. While all of these production elements make for a unique theatrical experience, Cuarón and Linde said seeing “Roma” on the big screen is just as important as ensuring people all over the world simply have the chance to see “Roma,” period.

Er is overigens een programmaonderdeel toegevoegd onder de naam: Sconfini. En staat voor:

This non-competitive section features a selection of a maximum of 10 works of different genres, lengths and targets. The Sconfini section may include art-house and genre movies, experimental and artists’ films, TV series and crossover productions, which may be preceded or accompanied by public encounters and conversations with the directors, actors and personalities from the world of art and culture. Only films presented as world premieres at the Venice Film Festival will be admitted to the selection.

Waar onder andere de EE draait van The Tree of Life!

On The Tree of Life - Extended Cut by Paul Maher Jr.:

The first thing to know is that this is not a “preferred” cut by the director. It is what it was before it became the “theatrical” cut, when all the beautiful buoyant moments were stripped out to make the film more interpretive, enduring and enigmatic. The broad strokes are all there from what we knew before, but in between are quick slashes of painted impressionistic light bringing more vitality and flourish to scenes long since memorized by its most cherishing viewers.

De enige Thaise film in Venetië draait in de Orrizonti-sectie en is het debuut van de cinematograaf van Vanishing Point en The Island Funeral. Dat belooft wellicht wat.

Heb zelfs het idee dat de bezetting sterker is dan op Cannes, maar misschien komt dat ook wel door het Netflix-Cannes debacle en de films die net niet klaar raakten voor Cannes, en dat Cannes kansen gaf aan nieuwe regisseurs voor de competitie.

Venetië 2018: de beste line-up in jaren - vpro cinema - VPRO

Wat een line-up heeft het filmfestival van Venetië dit jaar! Sinds de aanstelling van directeur Alberto Barbera in 2012 is het festival sowieso bezig met een enorme inhaalrace ten opzichte van Cannes, maar dit jaar spant de kroon. Op de persconferentie van 25 juli jongstleden, waar Barbera de geselecteerde films presenteerde, noemde hij het ‘mijn beste line-up tot dusver.’ En daar is weinig tegen in te brengen, want in de hoofdcompetitie draaien dit jaar nieuwe films van onder anderen de gebroeders Coen, Paul Greengrass, Damien Chazelle, Mike Leigh, Jacques Audiard, László Nemes, Alfonso Cuarón en Yorgos Lanthimos. Wat meteen een staalkaart is van de hedendaagse cinema. Variërend van diepe arthouse (Nemes) tot de betere cross-overfilm (Greengrass). Het is een rijtje namen waar ook Cannes zich voor op de borst geklopt zou hebben.

Distributeur Independent Films heeft al laten weten dat ze hem niet opnieuw uitbrengen. Wellicht dat er t.z.t. door het land eenmalige voorstellingen worden geregeld?

You can hardly blame Alberto Barbera, artistic director of Venice Film Festival, if he feels like the cat that got the cream. After a rancorous Cannes Film Festival marked by a stand-off between Netflix and the French film industry, and a Berlinale attacked by one UK newspaper for promoting the “dullest and most valueless films in its line-up”, the 75th Venice Film Festival programme looks like a veritable goldmine. Barbera and his team have been able to hoover up many of the titles originally expected to be in Cannes, while Venice is still clearly being used as the launchpad of choice for US premieres bound to be at the front of the Oscar race.

“It is very rare to have such a number of good things coming out at the same time in different countries,” Barbera enthuses, calling it “quite unique”, and a “once in a decade” situation.
