De competitie is wat eng met Frankrijk, vml. Franse koloniën en Azië. Liman zelf is een Canadees toch (spreken ze ook Frans)

En David Verbeek staat er toch ook mooi tussen. Al zit er blijkbaar geen Nederlands geld in de film.

wel hoor. IDTV (voorheen Motel) is coproducent en de film is ondersteund door het Filmfonds. Het is een Nederlands-Frans-Taiwanese coproductie, zover ik weet.

Dat zal hier wel het nodige gejuich opleveren.

Wel opvallend dat deze tussen de Quinzaine zit. Ik ken vrijwel geen van de andere regisseursnamen in dat rijtje.

Ook dit jaar dus een nieuwe film en niet eens zo'n korte...

Dat dacht ik vooral. Boe, als voormalig prijswinnaar in Cannes, verwacht je toch in een programma met wat meer prestige.

Is al uit in Denemarken zag ik nu. Dus dan is de competitie uitgesloten. Maar ze wilden denk ik wel de internationale première.

Competitie telt maar 18 films dit jaar. NIeuwe films van Kornel Mundruzco en Wang Xiaoshuai. Op het eerste oog toch een van de zwakste competities van de laatste 5 jaar. Afwezigheid van grote namen en grote films, terwijl er toch genoeg interessants uitkomt dit jaar. Waarschijnlijk zal Venetie een sterke editie kennen. Ook vreemd dat nieuwe films van Jia Zhang Ke en Pablo Trapero, die twee jaar geleden in de competitie zaten, nu opeens in Un Certain Regard worden gedumpt.

Cannes Classics- selectie nu ook bekend

Boudu Saved from Drowning by Jean Renoir in a restored version with unseen footage. René Clément, Luchino Visconti, Hector Babenco, Volker Schlöndorff, Mrinal Sen, and Luis Buñuel once again in the official selection. Rare footage from Marcel Lherbier. A restoration of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, for which work done on the sound means the film can be heard in a new way. Jack Cardiff, Ingmar Bergman and ‘cinema surfing’.

Cannes Classics, created in 2004, accompanies contemporary films from the Official Selection with a programme of restored films and lost films that have been found again, as part of their re-release in cinemas or on DVD. The screenings will be held at the Palais des Festival and will be shown again at La Licorne.

- LA BATAILLE DU RAIL (The Battle of the Rails) (France, 1946, 82’) by René Clément, awarded the Jury Prize in 1946, restored by INA and Full Images, will be screened in the presence of Mrs. Johanna Clément.

- BOUDU SAUVE DES EAUX (Boudu Saved from Drowning) by Jean Renoir (France, 85’, 1932), a restoration presented by Pathé in a never-before-seen version that includes scenes that were cut in the original. A Pathé restoration in association with the laboratries L’immagine Ritrovata (Bologne) and Digimage (Paris).

- TRISTANA (Spain/France/Italy, 99’ 1970) by Luis Buñuel, selected in Cannes in 1970, will be shown as part of a celebration of Spanish cinema at the initiative of French Minister of Culture Frédéric Mitterrand, who has invited his Spanish counterpart and several contemporary Spanish artists. Copy preserved by the Filmoteca Espagnole. The film will be presented by Pedro Almodovar.

- IL GATTOPARDO (The Leopard) (Italy, 185’, 1963) by Luchino Visconti, winner of the Palme d’Or in 1963. Restored in association with Cineteca di Bologna, L'Immagine Ritrovata, The Film Foundation, Pathé, Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé, Twentieth Century Fox and Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia-Cineteca Nazionale. Restoration funding provided by Gucci and The Film Foundation. Digital Picture Restoration, Colorworks. Sound laboratory services, L'Immagine Ritrovata. Special Thanks to Martin Scorsese, Titanus and Giuseppe Rotunno.

- DIE BLECHTROMEL (The Tin Drum) (Germany, 140’) by Volker Schlöndorff, winner of the Palme d’Or in 1979, restored and re-edited by Kinowelt in a ‘director’s cut’ presented by the author.

- KHANDAHAR (The Ruins) (India, 102’) directed in 1983 by Mrinal Sen, one of Indian cinema’s greats, who will be attending the screening. Restoration by Reliance MediaWorks with the support of the Indian State and the National Film Archive of India.

- LA CAMPAGNE DE CICERON (France, 111’, 1989) by Jacques Davila who passed away in 1991, in the presence of the film crew, who have come back for the occasion. Restoration presented by the Cinematheque of Toulouse with the support of the Groupama Gan Foundation for Cinema. The film will be re-released on DVD by Carlotta.

- LA 317e SECTION (France, 94’), which won Best Screenplay in 1965; copy restored by the Cinematheque Française and StudioCanal with the support of the Franco-American Cultural Fund, in the presence of its director Pierre Schoendoerffer and the President of the Cinémathèque Costa-Gavras.

- LE GRAND AMOUR (The Great Love) (France, 87’), in competition in Cannes in 1969, directed and presented by Pierre Etaix. Film Restored by Studio 37, the Technicolor Foundation for Cinema and the Fondation Groupama Gan for Cinema.

- AFRICAN QUEEN (United States / United Kingdom, 105’, 1951) by John Huston. Print restored by Paramount Pictures and ITV, and sponsored by Angelica Huston.

- AU PETIT BONHEUR (Happy Go Lucky) by Marcel L’Herbier (France, 102’, 1946). Print restored by the Archives Française du film (CNC) and StudioCanal.

- PSYCHO (United States, 109’, 1960) by Alfred Hitchcock. Print restored by Universal Pictures and Audionamix. Please note that the film’s soundtrack has been restored/reconstructed.

- KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN (United States / Brazil, 120’) by Hector Babenco, (Best actor – Cannes – 1985). Print restored by Ascent Media and Prime Focus, in the presence of the film crew for its 25th anniversary. The film will soon be re-released in France (Carlotta Films).

Finally, the World Cinema Foundation, established in Cannes by Martin Scorsese in 2007, presents: MEST (The Red Flute) by Ermek Shinarbaev, (Kazakhstan, 96’, 1989), KÉT LÁNY AZ UTCÁN (Two Girls in the Street) by André de Toth (Hungary, 85’, 1939,) and TITASH EKTI NADIR NAAM (A River Called Titas) by Ritwik Ghatak (India, 158’, 1973,). The prints come from the national film archives of Kazakhstan, Hungary and India. They were restored by the Cinematheque of Bologne / L’Immagine Ritrovata.

The Cinematheque of Bologna will also be presenting two short films: IL RUSCELLO DI RIPASOTTILE (Italy, 1941, 6’) by Roberto Rossellini, and THE ELOQUENT PEASANT by Chadi Abdel Salam (Egypt, 1970, 8’).

Documentaries

- HOLLYWOOD DON’T SURF (United States, 2010, 85’) by Greg MacGillivray, explores the theme of surfing in American films, with contributions from, among others, John Milius and Steven Spielberg.

- CAMERAMAN: THE LIFE AND WORK OF JACK CARDIFF (United Kingdom, 2010, 90’) by Craig McCall, a documentary on the life and work of one of the greatest British cinematographers who has worked for Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, Alfred Hitchcock, Richard Fleischer, John Huston.

- MEN FILMEN ÄR MIN ÄLSKARINNA (...but Film is My Mistress) (Sweden, 2010, 66’) by Stig Bjorkman, is the second in a series of unseen footage of – and by - Bergman, a document produced by the Ingmar Bergman Foundation.

- TOSCAN by Isabelle Partiot-Pieri (France, 2010, 90’) is a sort of ‘posthumous self-portrait’ of Daniel Toscan du Plantier, a French producer who passed away in 2003.

Filmfestival Cannes krijgt ‘Roze Palm' - Kunst - de Volkskrant

Italiaanse regering boycot filmfestival van Cannes.

De Italiaanse minister van Cultuur heeft gezegd dat hij niet naar het filmfestival van Cannes gaat, omdat daar de film 'Draquila' is geselecteerd, een kritische film over de aardbeving in het Italiaanse L'Aquila in april 2009. Volgens minister Sandro Bondi gaat het om propaganda. Bondi zei ook dat de film "de waarheid en het hele Italiaanse volk aanvalt".

De film 'Draquila - l'Italia che trema' (Draquila - Italië beeft), is een werk van Sabina Guzzanti, die gespecialiseerd is in politieke satire. De film maakt deel uit van de officiële selectie, buiten competitie, van het filmfestival van Cannes. De cineaste hanteert in de film een stijl die sterk doet denken aan die van haar Amerikaanse collega Michael Moore.

Bij de aardbeving in L'Aquila op 6 april 2009 raakte de middeleeuwse stad verwoest. Er vielen 308 doden en 80.000 inwoners werden dakloos. Ze moesten maandenlang in tenten overleven. Meer dan een jaar later is de schade nog steeds enorm. De filmmaker klaagt de corruptie en het machtsmisbruik na de ramp aan. "Met de film wil ik doen nadenken over de uitwassen van de beleidsmakers in dit land", verklaarde Guzzanti eerder op de website Articolo21. (afp/adv/hln.be)

Ook nieuwste film Ken Loach dingt mee naar Gouden Palm.

Met de opname ter elfder ure van 'Route Irish', de nieuwste film van Ken Loach, in het officiële competitiegedeelte van het Internationale Filmfestival van Cannes telt het beroemdste filmfestival ter wereld geen 18, maar 19 kandidaten voor de hoofdprijs, de Gouden Palm. De 63ste editie van Cannes gaat woensdag van start.

'Route Irish', met in de hoofdrollen Mark Womack, Andrea Lowe, Trevor Williams en de Spaanse zangeres/actrice Najwa Nimri, gaat over twee vrienden die als veiligheidsagenten hun leven riskeren in een door geweld verteerd Iraaks dorp. Als een van de vrienden er het leven bij inschiet, verwerpt de andere de officiële overlijdensverklaring en gaat hij op zoek naar de ware toedracht.

Mocht Loach de Gouden Palm veroveren, dan is dat meteen zijn tweede grote Cannes-trofee: in 2006 won de 73-jarige Britse regisseur reeds de hoofdprijs met 'The Wind that Shakes the Barley', een film over de Ierse onafhankelijkheidsstrijd. Kort stukje van de documentaire Draquila werd vandaag tijdens de openingsuitzending van Cannes 2010 vertoond.

Het is een beetje Daphne in Wonderland. Ik hoop dat ze ook in staat is om een beetje kritisch de films te benaderen. Maar aan de andere kant, met haar enthousiasme is weinig mis.

Deense Afghanistan-docu doet stof opwaaien in Cannes.

Een Deense documentaire over de oorlog in Afghanistan heeft in Denemarken behoorlijk wat politieke stof doen opwaaien. De film werd gisteren op het Filmfestival van Cannes getoond.

In 'Armadillo' van regisseur Janus Metz komen Deense Navo-soldaten aan het woord, die zeggen reeds gewonde talibanstrijders te hebben geliquideerd. Legerstafchef Knud Bartels wil dat een onderzoek wordt geopend naar mogelijke schendingen van het oorlogsrecht.

'Armadillo' toont de extreme omstandigheden waarin jonge Deense soldaten leven in een vooruitgeschoven post op de frontlijn in de provincie Helmand. De docu werd vandaag in Kopenhagen door parlementsleden bekeken. Een woordvoerder van de oppositionele socialisten had het achteraf over een prent "die een Deens Vietnam" beschrijft, "waarin jonge rekruten voor een mission impossible staan en de burgerbevolking het zwaarste gelag betaalt".

Storend vond hij ook hoe die soldaten vaak ongevoelig zijn voor het lot van de Afghanen, en hoe anderen zeggen in de Hindoekoesj te zitten "voor de kick en de adrenaline-opstoten". (belga/adb/hln.be)

Iran's Abbas Kiarostami shaped up as a possible two-time winner of the Cannes film festival's top prize Monday with his first film shot in Europe.

"Certified Copy," starring French actress Juliette Binoche, won a round of enthusiastic applause at a packed press screening here a day before its red carpet premiere.

Godard blames Greeks for Cannes no-show

CANNES, France — Film legend Jean-Luc Godard, known to some simply as "God", disappointed his following by cancelling a rare and much anticipated appearance at Cannes Monday for his latest movie "Film Socialism."

In a message of excuse as laconic and obscure as some of his recent works, the French New Wave icon said he was unable to attend "following problems of a Greek type" -- whether budgetary or Greek-style tragedy was unclear.

References to ancient Greece, including Sophocles, Pericles and Euclid are peppered through "Film Socialism", which releases this week in theatres and can be downloaded on the Internet Monday and Tuesday.

The 100-minute kaleidoscope of image, sound and SMS-style text journeys through history and ideas, from ancient times through the Second World War, the Holocaust and the plight of Palestinians, a pet Godard theme.

The reclusive, almost 80-year-old director, who shot to fame with "Breathless" starring Jean Seberg in 1960, and followed up with classics such as "Alphaville" and "Contempt", had been keenly awaited at the film world's largest annual event.

"I will go until death with the festival but I will not take a step more," he also said. ...

Queer Palm gaat naar tienerfilm 'Kaboom'.

Op het 63ste filmfestival van Cannes heeft de tienerfilm 'Kaboom' de Queer Palm gewonnen. Het is de eerste keer dat die zogenaamde Roze Palm wordt uitgereikt.

De Roze Palm bekroont een film die een positieve bijdrage levert aan de internationale beeldvorming van homoseksuelen, lesbiennes en transgenders. De jury bestaat uit organisatoren van Europese homofilmfestivals en internationale journalisten. Het is de eerste keer dat de Queer Palm in Cannes wordt uitreikt. Berlijn en Venetië hebben al langer een soortgelijke homoprijs.

'Kaboom' wordt omschreven als een sciencefiction horrorkomedie over een jonge biseksuele student die op zijn universiteitscampus een mysterieuze sekte ontdekt. De hoofdrol wordt vertolkt door Thomas Dekker. De film krijgt de Queer Palm omdat het "een andere seksuele geaardheid niet als een probleem neerzet", aldus de jury.

'Kaboom' werd geregisseerd door Gregg Araki, die eerder al 'Smiley face' (2007), 'Mysterious skin' (2004), 'Splendor' (1999), 'The Doom Generation' (1995) en 'Totally Fucked Up' (1993) regisseerde. 'Mysterious skin' won in 2005 de prijs van de jongerenjury op het filmfestival van Rotterdam. (hln.be)

Vind het niet zo verrassend, eigenlijk was alles wel verrassend te noemen omdat er geen enkele klaarblijkelijk uitsprong en het een festival van oude bekenden was. Ik had op Horse La Loi of Route Irish (al is Loach natuurlijk wel een gevestigde naam) gegokt en heb verder niet naar namen gekeken. Als je de grote namen namelijk ziet heb je in geen enkel geval het idee te maken te hebben met 'de beste' van de bewuste regisseurs. Kitano, Godard, Inarittu, ik bedoel toch wel meer dan gevestigde namen, en ik lees eigenlijk nergens dat dit zo enorm goed zou zijn.
