Filmkrant doet de komende elf dagen verslag van het 81e filmfestival van Cannes. Een voorbeschouwing op een even vreemd als veelbelovend jaar.
Hoewel we Le Deuxième Acte nog niet hebben kunnen zien, kunnen we erop vertrouwen dat de nieuwste van Quentin Dupieux een betere openingsfilm van Cannes gaat worden dan de vorige, Maïwenns Jeanne du Barry. Sowieso is het niet zo moeilijk om een betere film dan Jeanne du Barry te programmeren. Maar misschien wordt Le deuxième acte ook echt een adequate festivalopener.

VR en AR maken samen XR – en na Venetië, dat al XR’t sinds 2017, heeft nu ook Cannes een Immersive Competition in het leven geroepen. Dat is het goede nieuws. Het slechte nieuws is dat het allemaal nog weinig voorstelt.

Niet de meest spraakmakende films van Jacques Audiard ( Emilia Perez (Film, 2024) ) of Mohammad Rasoulof ( The Seed of the Sacred Fig (Film, 2024) ) maar Sean Bakers Anora (Film, 2024) wint een Gouden Palm. Tangerine en The Florida Project vond ik erg fijn. Dus ik ben benieuwd.

Cannes is een hoogtepunt op de internationale filmkalender maar bepaalt ook in hoge mate wat er het komende jaar te zien is in onze bioscopen. Hier doen Nederlandse distributeurs de meeste van hun inkopen. De Filmkrant maakte een rondje langs onafhankelijke distributeurs om te zien wat zij mee naar huis namen.
