De Britse acteur Jimmy Gardner is afgelopen maandag 3 mei overleden.

"Harry Potter actor Jimmy Gardner, who was brought up in Marlborough, died on Monday at the age of 85.

Mr Gardner appeared in many stage, movie and TV productions in a career that spanned more than 50 years, but one of his last roles was as Ernie Prang, the driver of the double decker Knight Bus, in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

His varied roles included parts in Dr Who, the Adventures of Young Indiana Jones and Finding Neverland.

He was the son of Ted Gardner, a former leading jockey who ran a bookmakers in London Road, Marlborough initially and later in Silverless Street.

Mr Gardner's brother Vic, who lives at Ogbourne St George, said he did try to follow his father in to horse riding. "He didn't like it very much and he always said as a child that he wanted to be an actor and appear on stage," said the brother.

Before the Second World War broke out, Mr Gardner worked for Warner Bros and then Gainsborough Studios as a props man and one of his jobs was passing a ready-lit cigarette to actress Margaret Lockwood before the cameras rolled and working alongside legendary actors including James Mason and Michael Redgrave.

After the war he went into repertory in Devon. In an interview when he was 73 he recalled: "We had to learn two or three plays a week that we now have weeks to learn, perform it, set up for the next one on Sunday and start again on Monday." "

Met name Oshima blijkbaar. Zijn naam zegt me niet zoveel.

Zeg maar gerust deed, want kijkende naar de grote namen van de laatste 20-30 jaar zie ik hem niet echt opduiken (Kitano, Miike, Tsukamoto, Iwai, Tanaka etc etc etc ...). Of ik kijk over een aantal dingen heen.

Kitamura Ryuhei zie ik, daar ben jij toch wel dol op? Tenminste nog eentje

Maar verder vooral een beetje het New Wave tijdperk. Zal eens op hem letten. Heb er nog wat van liggen.

Pas nog Hanzo the Razor: the Snare gezien. Speelde hij een hele fijne bad guy. En in Gohatto is hij geweldig als die klungelige ouwe samurai.

Ik had het ook niet voor niets tussen haakjes erachter gezet Maar het was ook al een ouwe knakker en daarvoor zijn de rollen vaak ook dungezaaid. Ik kende hem toch vooral als 'Hachi' in Onibaba.

Amerikaanse actrice Lena Horne overleden

WASHINGTON - De Amerikaanse actrice en zangeres Lena Horne is zondag op 92-jarige leeftijd in een ziekenhuis in New York overleden. Dat hebben Amerikaanse media gemeld.

Horne begon haar carrière op 16-jarige leeftijd als zangeres in de Cotton Club in New York. Zij speelde in ruim twintig films, waaronder Cabin in the Sky (1943), Stormy Weather (1943) en The Wiz (1978). Zij zong in film Stormy Weather (1943) de titelsong.

In maart 1980 kondigde Horne haar afscheid aan, maar een jaar later ging haar show 'Lena Horne: de vrouw en haar muziek' in première. Zij speelde die alom geprezen voorstelling meer dan driehonderd keer op Broadway.

Horne streed tegen racisme. Om haar progressieve opvattingen kwam zij in Hollywood op de zwarte lijst staan.

Een vrouw die ik altijd heb bewonderd, om haar talent en moed (en dan vergeet ik haar uiterlijke verschijning nog te noemen)

(en bedankt voor het plaatsen van dat mooie lied Dutchfan, een van mijn lievelingsnummers, en ontzettend moeilijk om te zingen. Tenminste op de manier waarop Lena dat deed)
