It Follows is a phenomenal genre film. Director David Robert Mitchell took an original premise (based in part on nightmares he had as a child), and crafted it into a beautiful mood piece. This work doesn't even have that much of horror. Much more lies the strength of It Follows in the strong use of color, the surprisingly good cinematography and the voyeuristic-looking camera work. In addition, Mitchell plays with recurring locations, props and the various seasons (multiple types of clothing are reviewed, but all sets seem to fit the teens equally comfortable).

Just when you fear that the scenario is going to remain a bit too conventional, follows the clever twist at the end. It Follows is much more than a simple teen horror, and lead actress Maika Monroe rises above herself. Stylized splendor as I like to see it.

More than 4*

peerless.

A big word, but when do you come across a horror film that introduces its own entity (with accompanying set of rules), manages to sample the best of classics and at the same time avoid almost all the pitfalls that the genre has to offer? It Follows does not reinvent the genre, but does know how to get the most out of it.

Most important pitfall avoided: It Follows knows how to involve the friends of the protagonist as subtly as ingeniously without the obligatory difficulty-convincing-of-the-seriousness-of-the-situation. You know; that the main character tries to tell people what is going on and is first declared crazy before anyone believes her. The scene on the beach is perfectly used for this, and also prevents it from getting too repetitive.

In addition, pacing and atmosphere are the biggest assets. Like the entity, the camera hovers and pans modestly and patiently stalking through doorways, windows, mirrors and across the street. To view the horror from the opening scene as a promise that is not kept is not understanding how it is deployed. On the contrary, it ensures that there is a constant threat throughout the film, whereby you as a viewer are also scanning the background all the time for that one suspicious, typical walking person who can appear anywhere. Knowing what it is capable of is enough to fear it.

Soundtrack is fan-tas-tic: buzzing with quirky synths that evoke the best of Halloween in particular, without becoming a repetitive tune. Perfect example of how the film manages to use previous horror history to give itself a modern look.

A film with its own face and also skilfully cut and pasted from the canon of horror. Atmospheric throughout the playing time and fair dose of jumpscares. Very little to complain about and a film that really knows how to get under your skin. Earned 4.5*

It's now the third time I've seen this one and It Follows is definitely in my top 10 horror movies of the 10s.

The score is very atmospheric and at times nerve-wracking. At a few moments, the film does not live on jump scares, but on the nerve-wracking feeling under the skin. Monroe her character has to constantly look over her shoulder and at any moment another creature could be peeping around the corner that is after her. Mitchell knows how to develop this very well and the film manages to expand this well with a number of highlights. Even at apparent moments when nothing seems to be wrong, you are constantly looking in all corners for a slow-running entity.

The film is original and very atmospheric. In addition, the score of It Follows makes a unique horror film that manages to distinguish itself from all the generic Conjuring universe stuff that seems to have become the standard in recent years.

4.0*
