Wild is an atmospheric film about Cheryl (Witherspoon), who sinks deeper and deeper into a swamp of sex and drugs after the death of her mother until she decides to take control of her life again. She decides to hike across America (the Pacific Crest Trail). Witherspoon puts on an impressive acting performance, and she manages to impress both physically and emotionally.
Witherspoon knows how to make Cheryl not only a person to feel sorry for, but also to laugh at, and she also knows how to play the strong and resilient side well. The flashbacks are incorporated in the film in a strong way and have an almost dreamy character. They give a good idea of Cheryl's life before she decided to embark on the trek. The people Cheryl meets during her journey are not very interesting (Michiel Huisman has a nice role), but through the short conversations you learn something more about Cheryl. Visually, the film looks beautiful, with nature and the vast landscape as an impressive backdrop. The music is also well chosen, and Vallée once again shows his talent and craftsmanship.

Wild is an entertaining movie but I'm missing something. I can't quite put my finger on what that is exactly. I think it's all pretty cool. Reese Witherspoon is a fantastic actress and she plays one of her better roles here as well. The script just isn't strong enough to keep you interested for so long. Very little happens which I actually find a bit strange on a 1600 mile trip. She's been on the road for about 2 months and somehow it seems difficult to make a film of only 100 minutes with that. The rest is filled with flashbacks where you can see that the main character makes a transformation. It is something typical for hikers or people who embark on pilgrimages that they get to know their own limits, both physically and mentally. These people really get to know themselves here. Some people need those insights and have to go through this hell for it.
Cheryl has been through hell and the Pacific Crest Trail is a moment for her to contemplate her life. The few encounters Cheryl has are used to clarify her background and motivations. Consciously or unconsciously, things remain somewhat unclear. In the end I am left with the feeling: was it that? Well, a six.
