A fourteen-year-old boy suddenly loses his mother, prepares for his First Communion, and discovers his sexuality. It takes place in Denmark in 1976. I realize now that I was about that age myself back then. It is an enjoyable film with beautiful visuals and sometimes beautiful scenes that are well acted. But the film also leaves me with a lot of questions. Not that the film is incomprehensible, but more about how things were back then. Especially regarding drinking and sex. Okay, it is the seventies, and the clock has been turned back quite a bit since then, but it still seems improbable that things were apparently a lot freer in Denmark back then than in the Netherlands. I did struggle with that. And actually, it is quite a shame. Because as a story, it could have been so much better. But emotionally, the film didn't really get off the ground either. That became clear towards the end when his brand-new girlfriend immediately ran off with his best friend and he apparently wasn't all that upset about it. And then there was also a very weird scene with the boys and a very perverted little man. RRRRRRRRRaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrr!!!!
