Jimmy's Hall plot

"Where Anything Goes and Everyone Belongs."

The film tells the true story of Irish activist Jimmy Gralton who fought for freedom of expression in the 1930s. Jimmy Gralton built a culture house in rural Ireland where people come together to learn, debate, read and dream... but above all to dance and have fun. To the horror of the Catholic Church.

Social and political conflicts, with the Irish struggle for freedom at the forefront, are Ken Loach's favourite themes. Traditionally, there are few or no well-known film actors in his films.

This "Jimmy's Hall" shows all these characteristics and traditionally that story is also set among the lower classes of the population.

It is a lesser known period and a lesser known conflict, this time mainly of a religious nature, that is revealed. A lot of criticism of the Church.

It's not particularly exciting and the characterization of the main character isn't that good either, but Loach still attracts attention with his very realistic and recognizable filming style.

Another typical, but extremely charming Ken Loach movie. This time with a historical touch, at the time of the very conservative Irish twenties and thirties, where the Catholic Church held sway in the countryside. Freedom of speech, knowledge and culture, let alone thought, were curtailed to keep the population under control. Anyone who was even slightly progressive was immediately branded a communist, a real swear word from that time on. The power of the Catholic Church was far from over. This was also experienced well into the 60s/70s when you watch films like The Magdalene Sisters (2002) .

The film is about a Jimmy Gralton who brings together the population of a small Irish village and stimulates the social life by organizing dance lessons, among other things. Not a political pamphlet, but the Church and the local dignitaries can hardly appreciate it. Witness the flogging of the daughter with whippings under the guise that it will be beaten out if necessary. Through the film you get a nice view of the cultural center, as it was 10 years earlier and how it was rebuilt when Jimmy returned from the US. The polarization between the established, rigid order and Jimmy's enlightened ideals are also nicely presented. Not a top Loach, but more than decent. For example, the life story of Jimmy Gralton in the US gets too little attention. It was not just an exile, because he experienced the Great Depression firsthand.

Unknown actors pull the cart and do that quite well. Natural and serene. Nice to have seen once. A solid 3.5*!

After ten years in exile for his Communist views, Jimmy [Barry Ward] returns to his native Leitrim, Ireland in 1932, where he is warmly welcomed and moves in with his mother [Aileen Henry]. Under his leadership, the local community renovates an empty building where the residents can come together to learn, talk, party and, above all, forget the daily grind for a while. But the local landlords are not happy and they receive support from Father Sheridan [Jim Norton], who will stop at nothing to curb Jimmy's "heathen behavior" and "Communist influences." Loach keeps his reputation as Britain's answer to Frank Capra alive with this combination of sharp social criticism and belief in the deep-rooted decency of the working class, with a superb cast and an authentic depiction of rural Ireland in the 1930s.
