Difret plot
Three hours from Addis Ababa, a bright 14-year-old teenager is on her way home from school when she is kidnapped by some men on horses. Brave Hirut grabs a weapon and tries to escape, but accidentally shoots her betrothed. In her village it is customary to practice kidnapping within marriage and this is in fact one of the oldest traditions of Ethiopia. Meaza Ashenafi, a powerful and persistent lawyer, comes from town to defend Hirut on the grounds that it was self-defense. Meaza has to make choices; she doesn't want to lose her job, but if she does everything by the book, there's a chance she won't be able to save Hirut's life.
