Evaporating Borders plot
Five chapters examine the effects of large-scale immigration on the sense of national identity in Cyprus, one of the most easily accessible gateways to Fort Europe. The Mediterranean island is a favorite destination of people smugglers, where the tensions associated with a massive influx of people are strongly felt. An attempt is made to get a grip on the loss of identity, memories and collective history that accompanies this large-scale immigration and which often forms the breeding ground for discrimination and xenophobia. We hear, among other things, a PLO activist and asylum-rejected man from Iraq, but also see neo-Nazi group ELAM roaming the streets in an attack on Muslim migrants.
