"You get one shot at life. Try not to miss."

AJ Manglehorn is an older, ordinary man who lives in a small village. He takes care of his sick cat, chats with the local bank teller every Friday and eats at the same restaurant every day. But there's more to Manglehorn: he's an ex-felon who, 40 years ago, gave up the woman of his dreams for that one big "job". Now he thinks obsessively about the choices he has made on a daily basis.

This film scores so low on Moviemeter and IMDB. I'm a bit surprised about it, because I think it's a very good little film that I watched with fascination. I think it is artistically put together, the acting is good, the characters are interesting, the cat is sweet and the camera work is beautiful. The longer I looked, the better I thought it got. I'm sure people will be surprised by the score I give, but that doesn't matter. I honestly haven't seen a bad movie in this. A pearl indeed, and yes, that is my opinion . 4.5*

It's a bit sad to see two top actors in such a syrupy, long-winded film. Al Pacino plays the title role, a locksmith who believes he squandered his only chance at true love long ago and wallows in self-pity. When a bank employee [Holly Hunter] shows interest in him, several (clichéd) obstacles have to be overcome before there is even a chance of the two getting together.

David Gordon Green tries to compensate for the lack of depth with some visual expressiveness, but hot air with a nice color is still hot air. Pacino's monotonous monologues quickly become boring.

Bad.

Completely uninteresting drama in which acting canon Al Pacino doesn't get any further than some monotonous nonsense. That other acting talent, Holly Hunter, seems to be tied to a character who barely has anything to do. The film is rudderless and just drifts around. I am normally the biggest fan of worn-out characters, whether in a cynical or warm tragicomic setting. But there's none of that here. Fortunately it doesn't take too long, because I have no idea where to look for the positive points.

1.5
